Affairs of the heart.

I have an appointment this morning for my regular monthly INR blood test. I’m sure I’m not the only one in S/S that has to have these.

From about 2004/5 I started getting heart palpitations. Intermittent at first. Then on Christmas morning in 2006 I ruined the families day by having a TIA (mini stroke).

So, after several years of juggling between various different medications. I was eventually diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation. Which is basically, over active muscles in one of the heart chambers.

Anyway. In 2012 I was recommended for a Cardiac Ablation. A procedure where a laser is placed right into the errant heart chamber and several of the muscles are severed.

It’s not a particularly invasive procedure. They make two keyhole incisions into your groin. One for the laser and one for a tiny camera. They proceed up an artery right up into the heart, where they do their thing. Not regarded as a major event. You are admitted to the ward, fairly early in the morning. Undergo the procedure. Then all being well, released the following day. They don’t guarantee success every time, as was the case with me, as the palpitations continued. So last year I had a 2nd procedure and this time it appears to have been successful as the palpitations have ceased completely. The blood tests are simply to keep any eye on my blood, As I am taking Warfarin now. A blood thinning medication to prevent further strokes.

I do get the occasional bouts of shortness of breath and I don’t think I will be climbing the local mountain anytime soon. But I feeling a whole lot better now.
