Are raisins and sultanas dangerous for dogs to ingest?

My husband put some fruit cake out for the birds to eat, and I think my dog has just eaten it. I have googled it and not sure how worried I need to be. Has anyone else been in this situation before? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

Vets usually advise that it's unsafe to give dogs Christmas cake because of the raisins. Chocolate is also bad for dogs. I suppose a lot might depend on the size of the dog. I once owned a labrador (well-known scavengers!) who found, and ate, a large bar of Cadbury's milk chocolate with no ill effects but if a small dog, like a Yorkshire terrier, had done the same, I rather think that it would have been very poorly. Might be worth a phone call to your vet for advice if your pooch seems unwell.

Thanks Carole .. he is a big dog and seems to be fine today, so hopefully no damage done ... I have also heard of a dog who stole a whole box of Christmas chocolates and ate them all including the wrappers! Maybe they are more resilient than we think? My dog drinks from muddy puddles and loves horse poo! And we then buy him premium dog food LOL!

Good grief - obviously got a stomach of cast iron 🙂 My dog pinched 2 Advent calendars and ate the chocolates as well as the wrappings - my daughters were gutted!!!

I think they are but have not had any of our dogs eat them
