I am sure anything that helps would be welcome. It would also have to include withheld numbers and numbers that are unrecognisable as standard UK ones eg we had one a week or two back that was just a series of zeros.

As an electronics engineer who is often plagued by nuisance calls despite being on the Telephone Preference Service, I have an idea.

I propose a small filter box that sits under the phone. It has an answer phone built in.

When you plug it in, it has no memories, but as calls come in, you press a Bar Call button any time during the call if you don;t want to hear from that caller again.

When the phone rings, the box recognises the incoming number and remembers if it is on the Barred list. If it is, it just gets diverted to the answer phone - and your phone does not actually ring at all!

If the number is NOT on the Barred list, the phone rings, and you answer it.

Yes, you have to pay for Caller ID, but this is cheap. Good idea? Shall I get designing?

I have caller ID and if I don't recognise the number I press to connect and then disconnect as quickly as possible. Seems to work for me wand saves having to speak to anyone.

My husband says 'He (whatever name they ask for) is not in at the moment, can you leave your number and he will get back to you' - funny but they never leave a number:-)

One thing you have to be careful with is not to be too hasty. I received a call a few days ago and thought it was a nuisance call and was just about to say 'not interested' (my usual comment), when the caller said it was Alison from the surgery and wanted to ask me a question re my prescription. She apologised for taking a second or two to react to my 'Hello' as she was busy trying to do two things at once as usual.

On a serious note though.... I am a little more sympathetic towards UK based call centres. After all - jobs these days are hard to come by and for some it is their only source of income. I know they are only doing their job so I am more polite when I inform them that I subscribe to the TPS and would they kindly remove my number from their database. It is best not to try and string them along as they have their targets to meet and are penalised if they do not meet them. As for overseas calls (you can usually distinguish between UK and Overseas) and recorded/no response - just hang up.

My son did this, waited until they got near to the end and started screaming 'No, what have you doen, it's all gone, all my work, my livlihood, alll gone, nooooo!'. Funnily enough they rang off. ๐Ÿ™‚

A man from the East phoned my house and informed me that he was the person who could cure all of the problems I was having with my computer. (I had heard of these calls - and was hoping he would call me one day!) I obligingly went along with his suggestions, all the time pretending to know absolutely nothing about the inner workings of the infernal machine! To cut short a long story: at the time when he asked me to allow him remote access to my PC I confessed that I had been keeping him on the phone for as long as I could to prevent him from trying to scam anyone less well informed than I. You see, I worked as a Field Service Engineer fixing computers, networks and printers before I retired. You could see the colour of the air changing to a Cyan Hue as his words of appreciation for my efforts filled the airwaves.
I like to think that the forty minutes he spent with me was forty minutes that he could not hurt anyone else:-). Job Done!

I also work from home so have all the time in the world. Whilst my wife often gets infuriated with these calls I try to spend as long as I can with different ways to keep them on the line that way upseting them as much as they seem to annoy others. One ruse I was recommended was to be friendly but at the outset establish that "I am sorry I will be unable to answer any questions" that invariably gets the answer "why" which is the start of a very interesting conversation "I am sorry that sounds like a question which I have already advised I cannot answer" and so it continues till eventually the person at the other end gets so frustrated they hang up., ๐Ÿ™‚

I have recently adopted a new strategy...by asking the callers to speak slowly, not to forget their names and telephone numbers as I have quite a bad memory...ohhh, and to let them know that I have a recording device attached to my phone. Amazing how quickly the phone goes silent, and you don't get any further call backs!!

We are registered on www.tpsonline.org.uk/ but even that didn't stop them all. I have done same as Sally Ann but in the end rang BT & they gave us a new number that is also ex directory - that was a year ago & has worked so far! ๐Ÿ™‚

Brilliant Warhammer! If I am certain it's not one of those scam calls where you wind up paying a phenomenal sum (plus any silence pause: put receiver down immediately). I wait until they ask for me and I say 'I'll just go and get them'. Then I leave them hanging on with the TV/radio going close by until, possibly half an hour later when they've gone I replace the receiver. Makes me smile (evil I know!) every time.:-)
