Found the following recommended by Which.

BT 8610 – from £50

This is BT’s top-of-the-range model, specifically designed to protect against unwanted nuisance calls. The call-blocking features are the best you can get without buying a separate call-blocking device. The built-in ‘Call Guardian’ feature actually uses the same technology as TrueCall call blockers, automatically screening your calls to catch out nuisance callers.

You can also choose certain types of numbers to block (eg withheld or international diallers) or blacklist specific numbers at the touch of a button. There’s a do-not-disturb mode to prevent all callers from getting through, although all of the call-blocking features allow you to specify a whitelist of permitted numbers.
BT 6610 – from £45. This phone lets you block up to 100 specific numbers, which can be handy if you’ve identified persistent nuisance callers. It can optionally be set to block any anonymous or international numbers from reaching you. This should block many call centres that hide their caller ID or call from overseas but, as with the BT 8610, you can add contacts to a whitelist so that they’ll always be able to get through to you.

Been using a CallBlocker for years and it seems to work. It comes loaded with a load of numbers installed, but if a call does get through, I usually have a chat with the caller and then after a short while, I just press a button on top of the gadget and that then cuts thm off in mid prime and stores their number!

The nuisance calls I like the best are these ones that say they are from BT and have a very storng Asian accent, to tell me there is something wrong with my BT Hub. I act surprised and ask them for their EID (Engineer ID number). When they stubble, that's when I press the button.

I don't get many of them now. Don't know why!

I lead a very sad, quiet life!!

I was deluged with cold calls for about 2 years, I begged them to stop, wrote to them, signed up with TPS but nothing worked. Then, one day, I told the caller that, I'm sorry but she died last week.
I then asked for the number to be removed from their database, and hey presto, no more calls!

Thanks for yr reply, I hadn't thought to try this I do get a lot of calls both on my mobile and land line, the company I questioned on offer the blocking service on both mobile and landline for a fee of £49.99.
BUT the confirmation of their services are only verbal no actual guarantee that they complete any search block.?

my number was removed from directory by accident 12 yrs ago.
result no cold calls except those culled from directories prior to that time.

my problem is a number was given out by social services to various branches is missing one digit . It is then the same as mine. I did find this out and asked them to correct it but I still get the occasional call from distressed people in need of help. This after many years. It has seemed impossible to trace all .
At least I can now direct them to the correct person. She has changed her name over the years. and this proved a problem until I found that out.
nothing more I can do
