Brexit court judgement?? Is democracy dead?????

Our MP's are so arrogant that they feel we the people of the UK yes Scotland as well , haven't got the brain capacity to vote for what we the people believe and want. Democracy is dead in Britain if these idiots get there way. My question to people is that any MP that votes against us leaving the EU should not be vote back in to there constituencies as they would be defying the will of democracy within Great Britain Shame on them!

I just cannot understand what is happening. I understood that the people voted their local M.P. to attend parliament and vote on their behalf. I assume that Brexit was considered too huge for that one member to vote for, which is why we had to vote. What is all the furor erupted about? We voted, the government should have accepted that. Personally, I think it is ridiculous. When I was at school we were taught that going decimal was the way forward to the day when we would be a united Europe. That was 55 yrs ago. What went wrong?

The British public have been let down yet again, Government cannot decide what they want to do, why do we pay these people who are mainly interested in there own objective we voted out it will not happen. The M Ps who tried just got trampled on and put by the wayside manifestos what a joke Conservative and Labour should never be allowed to run this county let the people who tell the truth be given a chance instead of being trampled on by Europe. Time for us all to stand up and refuse to accept the hand me downs they cannot put the whole country in jail ! disillusioned send Nigel in with a wrecking ball quickest way to get a result.

Now that the remain opinion is in the ascendancy trust you will see the error of your ways and come across the divide ! Welcome home !

You appear to be forgetting that of the 70% that voted, 48% voted to leave. Can you thus explain what is undemocratic?

My point was that not all people voted to exit the EU so why should MP's who voted to remain be penalised.

I'm afraid if UKIP were the official opposition and they appear to think they are, then we really are going back to an era of intolerance and hatred (already witnessed since Brexit was announced).

In my opinion the Remain voters come from two camps 1. The wealthy left wing luvvies 2, Voters who are scared of change, but most of the older generation voted leave, especially down here south of London!

Me thinks you don't understand how the governance of the UK works? We are a Parliamentary Democracy not one governed by referendum. When the EU Referendum was passed through Parliament it was not specific in tying the Government of the day to abide by the result, it was only
advisory. Given that omission by the legislators where we go from here was always going to be uncertain. The result of today's judgment may well be overturned by a higher court. However if the ruling is confirmed all it means is there as to be an act of Parliament to confirm enacting Article 50. From what I have seen on the news, so far, is that even remain MP's are not minded to block Article 50 but they want more information on what withdrawal from the EU looks like as I suspect most sensible people want as well. If it goes pear shaped the PM always has the option of calling a General Election but how that would affect Brexit is highly uncertain because it depends who wins. Given what would be at stake you could see people voting in a different way to how they normally do in order to get the EU option they prefer. As Confucius said may you live in interesting times!!!

Lionel, I don't think that is what we are talking about here. In reality it is just a point of procedure. It is a point of law whether the executive (the prime minister) has the power to invoke Article 50 or should it be Parliament. The Law Lords decided that as Parliament enacted us joining the EU they should be the ones that decide on invoking Article 50. The Government may well come up with a case that is accepted by the Supreme Court but then again it may not. My own preference would be for Parliament to have a say on Article 50 as like many others I would like to see the shape of what the Government is planning, at least a broad outline, before Article 50 is invoked. Is that unreasonable? For anyone wanting sovereignty returned to the British Parliament I can't see where the problem is as this would be sovereignty in action.

Thank you Klyne for your useful synopsis.

The thing that concerns me about the referendum was that not all affected Brits were allowed to vote. People that have lived abroad in Europe for more than fifteen years were not allowed to vote, but because of the outcome the pensions of those people have diminished. My own by 20%.

Many people believed a lot of the hype. Look at the big red bus that had a placard stating how the nhs would improve once we left. It was simply not true.

Look at the scaremongering in respect of immigrants.

There has been a lot of misinformation that caused some people to vote inadvisedly.

I am pleased that the matter will pass through parliament. The referendum was simply advisory.

Moving forward, what I would like to see are some structured plans for the future of our country.

I would also like to see a general election. Our current leader was not elected, and that is of a great concern to me.

Why should Brits living permanently abroad be allowed to vote in the referendum, they chose to leave the UK so why would they be allowed to make a choice on what we do here !

The UK is fast becoming a Third World country in so many ways!
Response from jeanmark made on 4th Nov 2016 11:26:47
I agree with that comment Dollie as we are far from being a third world country.
Response from MorrisandDoris made on 16th Dec 2016 17:40:52
Look around some areas of the UK it will change your mind !
Response from jeanmark made on 16th Dec 2016 18:25:48
I suggest you visit some third world countries and you may change your mind. Yes, we have problems but nothing compared to some developing countries.
Response from MorrisandDoris made on 22nd Dec 2016 21:12:00
In my comment I wrote, we are fast becoming a Third World country that means we haven't yet, we can still drink the water in the UK but if our government don't make changes soon we will go down like most of Europe will!

I agree completely, in my mind Thursday Nov 3rd will be remembered as the day Democracy died. I've emailed my local mp and made my views clear. There jobs are to serve the will of the people, not to ride roughshod over it.
