Cataract One eye surgery but 2 eyes needed

Hi I am booked in for cataract surgery, but they are only doing one eye at the moment and the other one can take up to 12 to 18 months to get done.

I am very worried about this as I live extremely rural, doctors 30miles away, nearest hospital 60miles nearest large supermarket 50 miles, also a carer and have other health conditions which make me immunosuppressed. So driving is very important to me.

I heard horror stories about people not being able to see properly or even drive with one eye done and one not, apparently the brain rejects it even if you get prescription glasses from the optician.

I covered one eye up and I would not be able to drive just with one eye and I kept on bumping into things. Any opinions or experiences would be appreciated.

I had mine done with 13 months between each operation and I was fine for driving. In fact just having the one done opened up a whole new world

They will not do both eyes at the same times because there is always a risk with any operation, in this case that you could lose youtr sight altogether.. I now have 20/20 vision in the badly clouded eye that was done. The other eye has a slight cataract in the outer corner, but with prescription glasses it is enough to give me good vision and I have no problem with driving. I doubt the other one will be done unless it deteriorates seriously. My NHS Surgeon and his team were absolutely brilliant All thanks to them.

Can I just tell you that I had cataract surgery on both eyes, but with only about 5 weeks between operations, at an nhs clinic referred by my optician.
After the first operation, the optician removed one lens from my spectacles and replaced it with plain glass and I had the original prescription lens left in for the other eye. It worked fine for me but I suppose it depends what the issue is with your sight in the first place and how well you can see with the new replacement lens.
I am sure your optician would be able to advise you as they deal with this sort of thing all the time.
My understanding is that you can drive after about 3 days if you feel up to it AND providing you can clearly read a number plate at 20 metres which meets the legal requirement. However, you are advised not to drive for long periods of time for about 4 weeks.
Post operations I now have 20/20 vision in both eyes and only need glasses for reading.
I hope all goes well for you.
