Charlie Gard - what are your views?

Just wondered what the Silversurfers thought about the Pope and Donald Trump offering help for Charlie Gard. Has it made the decisions his parents have to make even harder?

Do so agree with you Lionel. The intervention by people with little or no medical qualifications just makes things so much worse for the parent who are clinging to any hope there may be for their little boy. The medics as we know don't always get it right, but I'm sure they have explored all avenues possible. Whatever the outcome there will be critics on both sides of the argument. The Pope however well meaning and Trump ( well the least said about him the better). Will be able to move on, something Charlie's parents will never be able to do.

Hi Lionel. Just read your post. I was at the other end of the spectrum to you as a special educational needs teacher usually one to one with primary age children who had various needs, Down syndrome, autism etc. One small boy I cared for came to the school just before he was 5yrs old, he never stopped smiling and he never let anything stop him from running around in the playground and he loved nothing better than learning to read from flash cards. There were many occasions where this little boy would ask me to put his tube back in as it had fallen out, the reason for this being he had neuroblastoma and was constantly being fed a form of chemotherapy into his little body. Sadly he passed away when he was 6. His parents accepted that the medical profession had done everything they could, and many prayers had been said but to no avail unlike Charlie Gard this little boy had been able to communicate, laugh, play and smile and enjoy his short life

I worked for a short time in a hospital for severely mentally and physically disabled children and I well remember a baby girl who was terminally ill, she had hydrocephalus among other things, she was fed and cared for but no intervention treatments were used, Her granny visited every day and always asked if she was any better, it was heartbreaking. Her parents never visited.
Lionel I agree with you that there should come a point when we say no more....

I do feel sorry for the parents of Charlie, they did all they could to try and save their little boy and just when all avenues had been pursued by Medical experts, the courts etc. the decision should have been made but no.... in steps the Pope and Donald Trump to prolong things once again. Realistically what sort of life would the little guy have even with treatment? How far would his recovery go? I'm not sure..... it's all so sad
