Childhood Holidays

Can you remember the very worst holiday that your parents took you on, the kind that was sheer misery and that you couldn't wait for going home day to come around?

I guess I was lucky. My twelve days annual holiday to a different seaside resort each year were the high point of my year and even now I cherish wonderful memories of Weymouth, Southsea, Lowerstoft, Bournmouth, Llandudno and the rest. [Maybe I just forgot the tedious bits?]

We were in a 'flatlet' in Rhyl back in 1960, the accommodation consisted of a small room with a double bed and 2 bunk beds, there was a single electric hob and a sink for washing up, and that was it. The view from our window was of the gable end of the hotel next door, the room was dark and gloomy.
It was jelly fish season, though no-one warned me, and I got well and truly stung on my legs. It was very painful but for some reason I didn't tell my parents, instead I sat on the stairs and suffered in silence until the pain eased off after a few hours.
We were woken during the night by 2 policemen with something called a 'warrant' Dad went off with them to help them with their enquiries, I felt so proud and told all my friends.
Dad must have been very at helping the police because he was gone for some time, about 5 years I think.

My father once rented a cottage for us out in the wilds somewhere near Carnoustie. I think he thought it would be wonderful, but it was absolutely awful. My mother spent the whole holiday complaining about the tumbledown and not very clean cottage and it rained all day and every day. That's all I remember about the holiday which was forever afterwards known as 'that dreadful Carnoustie holiday'.

We had a similar holiday in Blackpool when I was about 5 and is my earliest memory of a holiday. Mum and Dad were both ill and the landlady was horrible and rude to both of them. Myself and my younger brother were both very upset and in the end we went home.

At 5 years old, I broke my collar bone the 1st day in Blackpool, so spent the rest of the week in hospital, in a metal contraption of sorts. The following year, my brother erupted in chicken pox, so he was isolated in hospital for his holiday, to avoid affecting the other guests in the boarding house I suppose. We never went back to Blackpool!
