Chronic insomnia - does anyone else suffer?

So many elders to whom I speak suffer from sleep issues. I just can't seem to fall asleep, and sometimes don't drift off until 4 a.m.

I have tried every possible remedy -- herbal, OTC, prescription. Medical marijuana does help, but it's very expensive.

I often wish I could get a chat community together of older folks who are up at 3 a.m. I know there are a lot of us.

I have given up worrying about it. I now normally stay up until 1.30 am/2.00am. I then find I can get around 4 to 5 hours sleep. I sometimes get up for a cup of tea around 3.30 as well. The lack of sleep does not seem to cause any issues as I am usually up before 8.00am for the dog and cats. So I assume I just do not need much sleep any more.

I too wish I could get involved with chat at the wee hours. I have sleep phase variance. I sleep from about 3 AM to 11:30 AM. It's lonely at night when everybody is asleep.

Insomnia is really hard to conquer. Just like you I was prescribed melatonin and this other sleeping pill (both from a reputed company: https://www.vitaminexpress.org/uk/). But nothing really helped. Sometimes, I would just give up on sleeping and get out of bed to take a walk. The walks feel calming but they're also very eerie. I just constantly think about how the world is sleeping but here I am taking a walk, and I can't help but feel bad for myself.

I put one of the music stations on low on the TV and hope to fall asleep before it switches itself off at 2-30 I think myself lucky if l have four hours sleep. I stay in bed watch the early morning news do the crossword and have a coffee. I must be getting enough sleep because I never feel tired, so I no longer worry about it, one of my doctors said sleep goes in ninety minute cycles so I would be getting the sleep I need.
