Cider Making

Primrose House Cider

For the last 6 years all of the apples in the orchard at Primrose House have provided the local wildlife with winter food and our 2 sheep, Molly & Polly with their very own winter windfall. So when my neighbour Mike asked me what I was doing with my apples this year I jumped at the chance to make use of them. Mike had planted 300 cider apples trees several years ago and now had apples for cider, he had contacted a local cider maker to press the apples. So all I had to do was pick the apples up and take them round to the farm, several trips in the Landrover and over a ton of apples later, Mike and I got them pressed. We watched the cider maker build the cheese with our apples and the 100 year old cider press did its work. Mike got two ex-whiskey barrels, they hold 57 gallons each, so the ton of apples produced enough cider to fill them both, with plenty left over for Mark at Indnicknowle Farm. We went back a couple of days later to pick up the barrels which had been sugared to start the fermentation process off, with strict instructions on how to protect our home brew. My son-in-law and grandchildren helped me to make the barrel comfortable on its new stillage, but Charley and Ewan are too young to help sample the fruits of our labour. It’s approaching Christmas and the Cider has slowed down now, just a few bubbles now.

When it’s ready in March, we’re having a party on the 29.3.15 so an open invite to any Silversurfers, if your down in Devon, drop round for a glass, bring your own food we’ll supply the cider.

I was fortunate enough to sample some of Alan's cider in June and it was a triumph! Pretty powerful stuff and very drinkable. It proved to be so popular that the barrel has now run dry. Can't wait for next years brew!
