Council Tax - The appalling injustice

Every one of us uses local government services. So why do so few of us pay Council Tax? I have just received my 2017/18 Council Tax bill which I am required to pay, regardless of my income or my ability to pay. I benefit from a single occupants discount. There are millions of adults (including many wealthy) who do not pay any council tax, merely because they happen to share a home. They consume but pay nothing. Essentially they are 'freeloaders'. The situation is further exacerbated when central government pushes more financial responsibility onto local authorities. Taxpayers make a saving and the burden is shifted to far fewer council tax payers. Taxpayers pay according to their means whilst council tax payers pay regardless of their means. So when your MP proclaims "fairness" in their pre election campaign, remind them of council tax. They will not want to know.

Replace Council Tax with central funding from general taxation. Then EVERYONE pays according to their income.

Helvellyn, Would you prefer to return to Maggie Thatchers Poll Tax when every adult had to pay instead of today's fairer council tax? I can choose to live in a high or low rated property according to my income but the Poll Tax crippled many people hence the riots and government U-turn.

So what's fair about council tax?! It is not related to income or to ability to pay. And why do so few people pay it? The fairest solution is to fund local authorities through income tax/central taxation - that way, everybody who can afford to pay does so. And poorer citizens do not have to pay. Successive governments are petrified of addressing the situation for fear of civil unrest. Jungle law rules.

Sorry to upset you helevllyn but I am not a "Freeloader", I pay my full council tax, even though I could spit dust at times.

You sound like a "freeloader" who consumes but pays nothing!
