Cycling

As my town is being turned into a cycle town I'm thinking of getting a second hand bicycle any advice or tips? Or am I being plain daft starting again in my 50s?

Have you what sort of bike do you have? I can't afford anything expensive. Do you wear a helmet?

Yes, after over 50 years not cycling, I got an ebike to do the converted railway line and country park near where I live. At first I thought 'there's no fool like an old fool', but I soon got the hang of it again, and the motor helped with hills and when I got tired. The freedom is fantastic, and fresh air, nature, its all wonderful, even the aches are doing me good, using muscles that got forgotten years ago!

I started cycling again last summer on my 70th birthday after too many years out of the saddle. I also treated myself to an ebike kit and am so glad I did - you still have to put in the work, but hills are not so daunting!
I now actually prefer cycling to walking and I use the app 'Map My Walk' for both activities - it's a great way to keep track of your monthly distances.
So, in answer to your question, you are not daft - you will gradually see improvements.
(I note it's an old post, but still applies to anyone considering getting back on 2 wheels!.)

Lol I like your tales of cycling mishaps. Well so far I went out and got a bargain bike for 30 quid it was great, almost new with a lovely basket and it even had a flashing light on the back! And a bell! I couldn't believe my luck! I snapped it up! got it in the car took it home it adorned my kitchen (a small cottage) for about a week I had to move it around to get the Hoover out but the grandkids thought it was a great idea and would argue about who would climb on it first!
In the end my daughter said "that bike looks a bit big for you mum have you been on it yet?" I said "it looks big because it's in a small kitchen!" I actually hadn't so when there was no one around I decided to get on it... well I couldn't even get my leg over the crossbar! so I stood on a stool and eventually got my bottom on the saddle ( this was in the kitchen) but my feet were dangling and I couldn't touch the floor! Well I thought this is no good for a 5ft midget like me! Bit late I know, but the next day I sold it and am back to being bike less again. That's my cycling experience to date!

Make sure you get the right type of bike for the cycling you want to do otherwise it will make it very hard work. If you are only cycling on roads then a road bike us best for you. If you are looking to cycle on various terrain then a hybrid bike will be the best option. Bikes with baskets on the front look very nice but aren't the best if you want to cover some distance. Whichever bike you go for you need to try it to make sure it is the right size. Any independent bike shop or Halford will be able to adjust the seat & handlebars for you

Hi everyone

I am starting out again finding activities to do as I am now on my own. I am interested in forming a walking group in London and looking for a travel companion. I am young at heart very fit and healthy and interested in travelling and finding a travel companion and a walking companion.
I would love to hear from you all.

You're definitely not being plain daft. My husband and I have both taken up cycling again and we're in our 60s. We've become increasing keen and go out for some good rides several times a week. In the summer it's lovely to ride somewhere off the beaten track for a picnic. Our bikes are a Cannondale and a Ridgeback which we're very pleased with. My only advice would be to try out the bike if possible, also to learn/brush up on some basics like puncture repair and brake adjustment. The main thing is to just to go out there and enjoy!
