DNA testing

Hi all, hope this post finds you all doing well. I am seriously entertaining the idea of having a DNA test done. Just thought it would be interesting to see if any of you kind folk have used any of the DNA services, or have entertained the idea. Thoughts?

I had mine done via a genealogy site so I could find out where I came from. I think i am part Viking and all of those Germanic tribes have a lot to answer for. Always been in the British Isles. Found a cousin I did not know I had. Apparently one of my dad's sisters had a child out of wedlock (more than one apparently), she was adopted so family lost touch, out of the blue her grandchild contacts me as she did DNA and now she has an extended family. It is currently on special offer. Join site for free and build your family tree, you do no have to subscribe to their services unless you want to.
It does not tell you your parents are not yours. Everyone inherit different bits of parents, grandparents DNA, unless all of the family do it and then it comes up as no close match between you there is nothing to fear.
Ask any questions you like.

Hi,

I too have debated it, just to see who I am and where I come from. But would I want to act on the results and maybe upset myself and others..... bit of a quandary

Anyone thinking of having their DNA tested on any of the websites which offer such a service might be interested in reading the following article first:
https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/06/gedmatch-police-genealogy-database/561695/
If it could be guaranteed that all DNA profiles were stored securely and could only be accessed by accredited people (e.g. police forces and medical researchers) with an information trail which could not be erased from the computers being used, then I would suggest that it would be a good idea for everyone's DNA to be recorded at birth. DNA profiling has advanced greatly and can now predict a person's age plus or minus 3 years and their hair and eye colour although, of course, the latter can be changed with hair dye and coloured contact lenses.

DNA is the way ahead for family history studies as well as providing a great source for interesting conversations concerning what has been discovered . Many families have long and strong roots in a particular part of the country . DNA indicates the origial migration pattern which may well astound you !

My son was given a DNA kit for as a birthday present.. It is amazing what he has found out. A convict sent out to Australia on his father's side and someone who was hanged on my side!! He has found out a lot more including an uncle of mine who died in Singapore and another Uncle who was killed in the blitz. A cousin has been in touch, his father was buried under rubble in the same house. He had severe leg injuries. This cousin was so pleased when my son sent him copies of photos of his grandparents. When the house was bombed the family pho0tos were lost.

Hello , I am new to this site and really looking forward to a long and enjoyable trip! I joined a DNA testing last year and have had a great experience so far, I have lived in U.S. all my life but discovered very large percent of my ancestors came from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. I haven't had any bad experiences at all and am already back 9 generations on maternal side.

Hi Perception,
I've often thought about looking into my ancestry because I have an unusual surname, and I think it would be very interesting to have this DNA testing done. My concern regarding DNA testing would be that it may be abused in some way; I don't think I would trust giving my DNA to some company, who knows what they may do with it.

Hi,
I wonder why you are thinking of having a DNA test. I subscribe to a well-known genealogy website and have recently been inundated with emails advertising their DNA test so that I can trace my origins. My second cousin in Australia had it done and, I have to admit, that the results were predictable! I haven't had my DNA tested because I'm not sure how my results will be stored. I've no guilty secrets or concerns about my ancestry 🙂 but I do think it's a bit Big Brother ish for the results of possibly millions of people to be stored on a database which could be subject to hacking and abuse.
