Do our MPs really have a voice?

Has anyone ever known their MP not to toe the party line? It seems to me all they do in Parliament is vote the way they are told. Surely a monkey could do this. So how can they honestly say, when campaigning, that they personally will do this or that.

You're right of course. I'm in far-off Australia but the same basic system applies.
Oh the ogre of Party Politics - but what is the alternative ?
If we elected a parliament full of genuine independents tomorrow, I'd bet that within a week, kindred spirits would be forming themselves into groups (parties) to pursue common goals - and to establish power blocs.

Some here in Aus do cross the floor from time to time but they risk endorsement by their parties for doing so come the next election.

I SUPPOSE at a push, with the party system, we at least have a general view of how a candidate will act.
