Double Dipping

Last night we popped into our neighbours for a drink. They had put some humous and carrots and breadsticks out for us to enjoy ... and then to my horror, I saw the host dip his breadstick, take a bite, and then dip it again!!

Is it just me, or do you find double dipping repulsive? Fine if the food is just for you, but what about when it is to be shared by others??

My stomach just turned and I continued to enjoy my glass of wine, and declined the offer of the humous!

Double dipping is an absolute pet peeve of mine! I cant stand it! it is so unhygienic and disgusting. I have seen so many things about it on TV that confirm all the bacteria and unhealthy issues involved. I have seen so many people do this at events - it is as bad as someone dipping their food into a sauce that is on your own plate - no different. There, that's me done! I will get off my speakers block and continue with the ironing!

Very unhygienic, could pass on unwanted bacteria, could cause stomach problems.

I have only recently started cringing at double dipping - I grew up doing it! I have never been made ill by it nor am I a picking person.

What was the person with the breadstick meant to do - throw it away half eaten, break off the end which had been by his mouth? How do we eat a buffet without double dipping? I see people lifting food and then replacing it - is this the same?

I think we have become over zealous and developed habits which are over picky. But I have begun cringing!!!!

Maybe break the breadstick in half, dip and eat, then dip the other, unsullied, half?

If I saw this happening I don't think I'd be able to eat the food either, I don't like the thought of others touching my food...... I'd prefer little individual tubs of dips but I know that's probably being silly.

It's just plain nasty, rude and inconsiderate. On a similar note I cannot tolerate someone dipping into the food on my personal plate. I'm not selfish but hail to the no on that!

And the party season is upon us so there is going to be more double dipping and finger licking to come! Sure it won't kill us but it still makes me cringe ... just how I am I guess?
Response from jeanmark made on 16th Dec 2016 11:46:21
You're not alone, a number of us are put off by such habits regardless of whether they are harmless or not. Fortunately my family and close friends share my dislike for the practice.

I quite agree! I felt the same when we went to a friend's birthday party and he served his birthday cake, supporting it with his finger which he licked in between each piece!

So agree Lionel but younger people are still obsessed with 'cleanliness'. I recall a few weeks back a young girl being horrified when her friend said she only showered once a week but washed every day. She called her dirty and said didn't she realise she could die from all the bugs she was harbouring. I said don't you realise that money you just put in your purse was full of bugs - she then used her alcohol gel!

Oh Friar's Balsom, I hated the smell when preparing inhalations for patients. Kaolin poultices, I used to get in a right mess trying to prepare them. As to Green soap enemas, always given to ladies going into labour as if they didn't have enough to contend with!

Very funny LittleMinx, I await the result.

Totally agree with you, Lionel, if we don't ingest a few germs now and again, we will lose our basic immunity to all sorts of things. I still use Germolene quite happily, and always have a tube of it in the bathroom cabinet. It's especially useful for little cuts and grazes as it has an anaesthetic in it these days which actually works.
Response from jeanmark made on 26th Nov 2016 13:02:37
Brought back memories LittleMinx, I'd forgotten the OBE no wonder I never had the desire to become a midwife.

Lionel, I may not have experience of a cow 'depositing' on me but I can assure working in Infectious Diseases has its moments!
Response from jeanmark made on 26th Nov 2016 19:57:03
Five children, yes you deserve an OBE and not with Castor Oil, I should try to give that up.
Response from jeanmark made on 26th Nov 2016 20:16:06
He was probably too busy delivering 5 babies and forgot......
Response from jeanmark made on 27th Nov 2016 15:22:12
Tell me Lionel, if red diesel is used for any purpose other than in a farm vehicle, do you have to pay tax on it? I can see the Government rubbing it hands together if used in a delivery suite.
Response from jeanmark made on 27th Nov 2016 18:04:10
Lionel you surprise me, I thought you knew that you get pregnant the same way whether in the jungle or the UK, it's just the former realises making babies and giving birth is a natural thing to do.
Response from jeanmark made on 27th Nov 2016 19:17:30
Am I the only person that has never seen a Star War film?
Response from jeanmark made on 28th Nov 2016 12:49:18
Well Lionel I have seen Star Trek films as my husband used to like them. The last time I went to the cinema was to watch Earthquake, I can't cope with being being in a dark place surrounded by strangers! I will watch DVDs or just wait for them to come on TV or stream via Amazon.

LittleMinx, I have little interest in Sci Fi, books or otherwise, I have enough problem trying to work out planet earth and its occupants without looking farther afield! I will watch a film but can rarely relate it to reality.
Response from jeanmark made on 29th Nov 2016 15:55:00
Well at least you tried LittleMinx, didn't your friends want to join in?

Maybe they suffer from Mysophobia, (or any of the other phobias) a pathological fear of contamination and germs?
Response from jeanmark made on 30th Nov 2016 14:55:14
May be they don't suffer from a phobia, if they have started to stay longer for tea and cake they obviously do not have a problem with your kitchen cleanliness.
Response from jeanmark made on 30th Nov 2016 17:53:48
I must admit to loving clear frosty nights when you can see the stars. A clear plastic heated tent would be good except my step-daughter would take it over! As for Red Diesel, I bow down to Lionel's superior knowledge as to whether that would be suitable.
Response from jeanmark made on 30th Nov 2016 19:31:45
I'll tell her that, she loves the moon and stars.

That is what worries me, I'm not sure the NHS can continue on its present road. But as Bevan is quoted as saying "No society can legitimately call itself civilized if a sick person is denied medical aid because of lack of means". Unfortunately that day may come.
Response from jeanmark made on 27th Nov 2016 17:55:10
I think young mothers today do not have the support system available as many years ago where they could go for advise. The news media are very quick to report on some tragedy that many mothers then 'panic', I don't think they can be blamed for this. It is adults with a sniffle that I get annoyed at believing there is a 'pill' for everything.

You were brave taking on young mothers with limited vocabulary!
Response from jeanmark made on 28th Nov 2016 13:12:31
Well Little Minx, it's a little unfair to blame the Spanish for all types of flu but it is believed to be the cause of the outbreak in 1918 that is estimated to have killed 40 million people across the planet. A book, published in 1999 called Catching Cold by Pete Davies, is a fascinating read. It tells the story of the 1918 flu pandemic ( believed to be a forgotten tragedy) and discusses current scientific efforts to isolate the particular strain that was so virulent, in order to prevent the same tragedy from striking again.

Lionel, I may not have been attacked from a dizzy height but I can assure you any height can be a surprise, particularly when deliberately thrown and LittleMinx, there isn't always time to duck!
Response from jeanmark made on 28th Nov 2016 13:55:29
As I worked in Infectious Disease, Tropical Medicine and HIV I obviously have a great interest in such subjects. I do believe in vaccines as a means of to trying to prevent outbreaks and have seen their value. I have also seen the problem of people not taking up an offer and it isn't always the individual that suffers. The MMR vaccine is a classic example and often refuse by young people who have not witnessed the devastating effects of measles and not understanding it may not be their children they're putting at risk.

Rant over.

Sometimes having the brown stuff thrown your way can be seen as good experience!

Its no wonder we get ill we are protecting ourselves far to much that our immune system has nothing to fight against. Double dipping doesnt bother me but the humous does Yuk!
Response from Tyjen made on 26th Nov 2016 12:08:43
We pick up germs every day, the coins and bank notes from shops, the handles to toilet doors, hand rails etc; what about the cups in cafes have they been washed properly? the forks and spoons have been in other peoples mouths! When you consider all those whats so scary about sharing a dip?
Response from jeanmark made on 26th Nov 2016 13:14:04
I think us 'older' ones do have a good immune system as we were brought up on 'dirt' but I hate double dipping. Maybe working in Infectious Diseases taught me something and I don't kiss strangers on the lips either!
Response from jeanmark made on 27th Nov 2016 15:28:37
Now you know why I would be careful Lionel.

Asking a stranger to provide a full medical history going back twenty five years and signed by a doctor may put off a potential lover, that's if I had a mind to wander!

I would not do it myself but it does not bother me. No one has ever died from double dipping or spoon licking. This does seem rather extreme and must make life quite difficult. With a dog, cats, and grandchildren you a need fairly relaxed attitude to this type of thing to lead a normal life.

Having said that my wife will not drink out of a bottle of water that I or anyone else has even sipped. When having a shared meal she will put food on her plate before anyone starts (we are used to it) and only eats what is on her own plate. I have never really thought about it as she has always been like that but it is probably a reflection of the same fear of bacteria from other people.
Response from jeanmark made on 25th Nov 2016 15:56:55
Patcaf, how do you know no-one has ever died from double dipping or spoon licking? Yes, you do need to be a little relaxed when practiced in families but it's a little different than sharing a strangers saliva!

I think my double dipping phobia stems from when my kids were babies .. I remember seeing what happened to a jar of baby food which had come into contact with the saliva on my babies spoon, and how quickly the enzymes started breaking down the food!!
Response from Marley444 Original Poster made on 25th Nov 2016 08:22:39
Are you a perfectionist as well? I am! It can be hard work!
Response from jeanmark made on 25th Nov 2016 14:10:50
Maybe we are all a little OCD LittleMInx. I have the dipping phobia plus I can never buy 'salad' ingredients left in the open in supermarkets even when they have a cover over them. All those people breathing and coughing over it makes me want to retch.

Don't get me started on the anti-bacterial train, why are people so gullible? They won't take antibiotics for a genuine reason but are happy to spray every thing with a spray that kills 99.9% of known bacteria without recognising that as soon as they touch the surface it becomes contaminated. They complain about us 'oldies' living so long and then are amazed we were brought up with dirt without becoming ill!!
Response from jeanmark made on 25th Nov 2016 15:51:43
Good for you LittleMinx, I've nursed a few tramps in u time and they always have such interesting tales to tell.

I don't subscribe to Black Friday as feel it is just one more thing we have inherited from our American cousins. But to be fair, I'm too tight to buy things I don't want just because someone has told me its a 'bargain'. Last year an American friend of mine pointed out that only in America would you have Black Friday and Thanksgiving in the same week!
