Employment references

Has anyone had problems getting employment because you can't give relevant and up to date references? After we moved from the area where we lived for 26 years, I decided I would not want to do the same work as I did in my previous town. So I started applying for different social care type jobs (I did this many years ago). It is very common not to hear anything back if you applied. However, I was offered an interview with a large international care company and because of previous experience they offered me the job on condition that they would receive suitable references over the last 5 years.

Currently, I do voluntary work, but the company agreed to give references for me. The 2 years before that I did not do any paid work due to moving and other family circumstances. Then it was the company that I worked for for 17 years. However, the business was sold and my old boss retired. She was willing to give references, but the company that I applied with would only accept a business email address for reference.

Now I am stuck; Yes, they offered me the job, but I can not give a business email address and I have not heard back from them yet, even though I sent details of what I did over the last 5 years. I have emailed and phoned them lots of times, but they just say that they forwarded it to the head-office and let them decide. This is now over 3 months ago. I would like to say keep your job, but knowing how difficult it is to even get an interview, I feel I can't easily do this.

Any advise/ experience?
