First Aid Training In Schools

The Tonight programme on ITV1 last night highlighted the appalling loss in the UK of up to 140,000 lives each year due to the lack of basic first aid being administered. In Norway it is taught in schools as part of the curriculum and includes CPR and the use of a defibrillator. So the question asked was should we do likewise in this country. Is there really any question? Of course we should and without delay. We then had an MP (their names never register with me as I mostly view them with distain!) firmly behind the move – good for her! But; we then had this namby pamby Minister for Education saying ‘we should win hearts and minds (obviously thought she was on the front line in Afghanistan!) and it should be voluntary. Words defy me as to what I thought of this silly woman. In the NHS even receptionists have to undertake CPR training! For the sake of all those people who could just our need help I would like to see it made compulsory for EVERY school to provide it and promotion for adults to take a basic course in the main aspects of first aid. I have been trained in CPR and it really is not difficult, but I admit I forgotten most of my other first aid so Iam now going to look it up again. Does anyone agree with me that is should be compulsory in schools for the age of say 12 years?

Great AnitaN! I teach the over 60s to use computers and also help in a Job Club with CVs and finding work via the internet (both voluntary) and this got me thinking. We who are trained could offer our services in just the same way. However, the opportunities for this need to made available by the Education Dept etc.
