Foreign food

I have done quite a lot of travelling since retiring, some just for relaxation and some to research. Bulgaria, France, Spain, Portugal, many of the Greek islands, Malta, Morocco. My wife has always been keen on trying foreign food whereas I am very old fashioned in what I prefer to eat. In Greece she has tried many of their dishes, I kept to egg and chips, In Spain she's tried Tapas and Paella, I kept to burgers and chips. And so on. I do all the cooking at home and I think it is probably that I like to know how fresh the food is that I use and how well cooked it is. I'm always wary of how clean and spotless kitchens are abroad and of course how clean the people preparing our food is. I wonder if I'm on my own here or are there others like me?

I think you are missing out on a lot of delicious food. If you do the cooking why not make some of the food that you will come across when travelling? I don’t go much on rice but I love paella & make sea food paella on a regular basis.
Go on surprise your partner with a new recipe of something she would never expect.

I am also keen to know that hygiene is good in restaurants here and overseas. A food hygiene certificate is a reasonable pointer that things were fine on the day of inspection, but no guarantee that standards are met every single time. It is easy to become paranoid about this and miss out on some lovely meals at home and abroad. Try something different next time you go abroad, your wife does with no ill effects so you should be fine as well.

Why assume that a different country has less hygienic ways of preparing food. We always eat locally and in places like Hong Kong, Singapore etc. we would always eat in the local 'restaurants' or food halls, rather than tourist restaurants. The only time I suffered mild food poisoning was in the expensive restaurants, one in Hong Kong, one in France and one in Devon! Never once in local ones, if the locals eat there, that's a good enough recommendation for me.
