Gardening on a balcony

I am moving to an apartment/flat with a balcony. I would like to grow some tomatoes. I live in the Midwest of America and wonder how best to grow edible tomatoes or if it is possible?

As Carole AH suggests ... tomatoes are easy to grow ,,,, and in tubs as I do every year providing you stake each plant and put the tub in a tray to catch the water. I feed tomatoes with tomato feed once a month to start then once a week when with blooms.
If the balcony is sunny you can turn the tomatoes around sometimes when the fruit grows.

I always grow the sweet cherry tomatoes as they grow quicker ... my grandfather used to pick the just tuning colour tomato wrap with newspaper and store in dry place for later enjoyment or make chutney like I do

Hi TriciaW,
I'm not sure what your climate is like in the mid-west of America but over here in the UK it is possible to grow tomatoes outside during the summer months. There are so many different varieties of tomato so perhaps a trip to your local garden-centre might be a good idea as they would be able to advise you on which plants to buy and what you would need to grow them in. You will probably need a grow-bag (sack of compost) and canes to train the plants to keep them upright. Some varieties can be grown in hanging-baskets so that might be another option. You might need to consider the weight of the pots/bags and also whether, when you water them, if you might inadvertently cause problems on the balconies below yours - don't want to set off on the wrong foot with your new neighbours! 🙂 Good luck and don't forget to let us know how you get on! There's nothing better than the smell and taste of a home-grown tomato.
