General grumble about kids today

Is it just me, or are kids (teenagers) these days more than ordinarily dim?

Most of them can't spell, and they write in a very strange manner, with the paper on its side and writing up and down rather than left to right.

Oh well, I'm getting old, and in my youth there was no TV, no double glazing, no central heating, no social media, no mobile phones, if you fell over and skinned your knee your Mum would tell you "It'll be a pigs foot by morning" and stick a plaster on, rather than rushing you to A&E. Sigh.

Am I getting old?

HI. This is my first time on the site so bear with me! I work in a High School as a Pastoral Support Worker and I have to say 99% of our young people, I think, are amazing, The majority are kind, polite, funny, often humbling and ok make mistakes sometimes but they are children after all! And don't we all make mistakes still? I actually think it is sad that as a country we seem to demonise young people when they are really just trying to survive in this strange world like the rest of us. It was after all not their generation that made this world!

Interesting you should think that perhaps I forgot to factor in all the C Bernie's viewers. Maybe a speakers corner question

How fascinating, growing up with no TV and central heating. I would love to hear your story...

I think your comment might be a bit sarcastic, 🙂 Natasha F, but I don't mind.

So,! I don't think, like, it is, like, just you, Sulia. So, it's, like, my wife and I think this 'modern' way of, like, talkin' is dreadful. When we were growing up we actually had elocution lessons and I doubt the 'modern' generation even know what that word means. The media don't help either, some of the TV presenters look scruffy and talk like it doesn't matter about pronunciation etc. When I have complained to the BBC their excuse is "it reflects modern life" or some such garbage. They should choose their presenters more carefully as they are often listened to and watched my thousands of youngsters.
Here enders my rant...like !

On the whole, yes, but it isn't their fault, it goes back to the Seventies and the introduction of trendy child-centred teaching methods and the dismissal of English Language being taught as a separate subject concentrating on grammar. When I was at work (over 20 years ago) my workplace hosted many foreign visitors over at my workplace to gain experience in our specialism and the poor language, grammar and spelling of the young employees was an embarrassment when someone, whose second language is English said "I thought the correct English was...…" and they were always right. The trendies, by dismissing traditional methods as boring and not stimulating, have being doing school pupils a disservice for decades now.

Yes me too, I so agree with you, but what worries me more at the moment, is all these doctors, nurses and carers working on the front line is please god when this is finally over are able to have a healthy life, not bad dreams and nightmares as our soldiers suffered after two world wars, lets hope it will be a happier world.

Post traumatic disorder could be the next problem the NHS has to.face Mental health provision is improving but I hope all those who need help will seek it and find it in their own areas.

Yes as are we all.I don't have experience of today's teenagers but we are all a product of the times we grew up in.Personally the comparison to our younger days only serve to make us nostalgic generalisations only serve to deminish the abilities and talents of many teenagers. Not all
skills are academic consider the young carers caring for parents during the Lockdown
Unfortunately we are where we are and look forward to the future when today's teenagers will be tomorrows adults who"s view of life will have been influenced by the actions and reactions of the world to the pandemic.

No, they are much as usual, some really bright ones, but spelling, punctuation and grammar are not top of the list these days, nor handwriting skills, and text talk on phones does not help and the lack of reading a few good books, word for word, and understanding their structure. Digital technology reigns.
But our Generation are Survivors and proud of it and can still show the young ones a thing or two, so take heart!
