GP's to open 7 days a week

There is much debate going on about proposals for GP surgeries to be open 7 days a week.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt will challenge family doctors to embrace the Government’s plan for surgeries to open seven days a week, which has proved deeply unpopular with the profession. He is also promising extra investment and help for under-pressure services.

Mr Hunt says that with an ageing population and more people living for longer with chronic health conditions, the NHS now needs “effective, strong and expanding general practice” more than at any time in its history.

Doctors say they’re already overworked and that patients don’t want weekend appointments anyway.

What are your views? Do you find it easy to get a mid-week appointment with your GP? Would you welcome appointments with your GP on a Saturday or Sunday?

I wouldn't mind this at all. I find it increasingly difficult to see my GP. My doctor has a walk-in surgery and this is what the receptionists advocate at all times. The last time I did this, I waited over 2 hours. Because I absolutely insisted this time, I was finally given an appointment - for 3 weeks time!

Good Luck,

I cant even get though on the phone, 99% of the time, I'm talking to a robot about my symtoms

Yes well that's like most call centres. Why on earth they don't just train their call centre people to take all calls I don't know. It cannot be that hard and then just think how happy we would all be just being able to phone up straight away!

My local Health Centre has receptionists answering the phone, but you still can't get through 99% of the time.

If it means I can actually get an appointment on the rare occasions I need one, then it's a good idea.

This is a great idea and should reduce the queues in A&E at the weekend and will be more convenient for those working mon- friday 9-5. Just need to train more doctors to make it work.

My surgery has recently introduced telephone appointments which I think is a great saving of time for me and the doctors, so I am very happy about that 🙂

I don't think its difficult to contact with GP. On Sunday, it is very hard to get an appointment with him. But on Saturday, its easy. I always call the GP reception and ask for an appointment that suits me the best.
