Hacked..off!

Hi all, I'm experiencing some issues of late with my laptop, which I am hoping somewhere out there techy wise can help me with.

I am receiving emails from someone who is trying to extort money from me.

I've had 3 or 4 so far, all from different senders.

They are telling me they have access to my computer, camera etc. Usually, in the past, I would laugh these off and hit the delete button but.....the last 3 or 4 have actually included my password to certain sites (like Facebook) which of course I have changed.

Just got another one day informing me they want $1,000 in bitcoin or they'll be sharing all my info with other users to abuse and use as they please.

It's worrying for me, having to keep changing my password. I've contacted the Microsoft support centre, and all they tell me is my laptop has the latest windows defender antivirus tool installed and to ignore the emails.

Can someone please help me?

Thank you in advance.

Take no notice of this, I had a similar email, problem was they coundn;t take controls of my camera as well since I had no camera. They are kiteflyers, they send out thousands of such emails hoping to gain a small percentage of suckers. Delete it.

Hi
I cannot see a reply button, so hope this reaches Yogafan and his/her problem.

My son has fallen for this trick twice, lucky enough, I managed to retreive the money he was scammed for £290 + £499.

My advice is simple, lets assume you have 10 friends or businesses that you correspond with, if EVER you receive an email other than those 10 (or how many you decide on), you delete that email that is not among your 10.

Do you use Googlemail?

Any email you find is not from your contacts then delete it ESPECIALLY if it is asking for money from you. Just mark it as spam and then empty your spam folder.

Too many people fall for these scams and did you know it's illegal to use someone's email WITHOUT their permission?

Here is a link that maybe of interest to read. https://ico.org.uk/action-weve-taken/nuisance-calls-and-messages/

Gives a lot of info. on data protection.

Many sites for which security is essential have two-factor verification (or authorisation). Amazon has it, Outlook does and so do many others. Its a bit of a pain to set up and you will need to download an authenticator app for your mobile. Don't worry, they're free. Google has one as does Apple. Once set up, whenever you or anybody else tries to access an account from a different computer they will need a code generated by the authenticator app. And of course, use separate passwords for each and every site. Password managers will generate one for you.... Good luck

The problem with antivirus software is that hackers are continually finding ways around them, which means constantly updating the antivirus software. Windows by default is set to an Administrator account which allows access to all areas of the PC. This means that if you open a email which has a virus, then it can affect you computer without you knowing. To be safe when browsing or using the web, then logging in as a "Standard User" would not allow the virus to automatically install itself on your computer. You would need two accounts, one as a Standard user to browse and use email, and then if you wish to install new software or update your computer, log into the Administrator account. If you search in Google "how to create an account in windows", then follow the instructions and make sure that the new account is set to "Standard User". You can now log into whichever account you need.
