Hearing Loss Challenges

I have some hearing loss, have hearing aids and go to a lip-reading class. These are only useful palliatives. I have just e-mailed my MP about the ubiquitous use of background sound effects by the BBC and others in dramas and documentaries. They might provide 'effect' but they destroy audibility and hence comprehension. In this electronic age it should be possible to produce the sounds separately from the dialogue and then unite them - or not unite them - at individual choice by some sort of red button method. Opinions?

I also agree with you, I love my films, dramas etc. and do find that the background sound/music spoils my enjoyment of the programme as I lose the plot by not hearing the dialogue. Maybe lip-reading is the way to go....I wonder if there is a class by me!!

My wife has bad hearing, she went to the Doctor's. He asked her to describe the symptoms, she replied, Homer has a yellow face and Marge has blue hair

Oh how disappointing...I saw the title 'Hearing Loss Challenges' and thought someone deaf people were organising a triathlon, or something similar.

I agree with you Keith and I don't have a hearing problem. I know it is an issue that has been raised before with the BBC they are not the only ones. I have even noticed modern films have begun to use distracting background music but maybe that is to prevent you understanding the dialogue!
