Hello from Norfolk!

Hi everyone, My name is Debs and I live in Attleborough in Norfolk, but originally from Birkenhead, Wirral. Married to Paul, (a scouser) for 30+ years and happily ensconced with kittys as children 🙂 I work as an IT Trainer, mainly training Microsoft Office and Clinical Systems. I am self employed, (www.dsroberts.biz) and have an embroidery business too (www.lalapalooza.co.uk) which I run around my IT Training work. I am a Red Hatter (www.borobelles.co.uk) as I wanted to make friends locally to me, and am also trying to get to grips with my garden.. Looking forward to chatting and hopefully making some connections locally too! Have a lovely day everyone!

Hi Debs and welcome. I originate from Norfolk but left many years ago to start my nurse training and never returned to live. My family still live there.

Hi Jean!

I'm orginally from the North West, but ended up here twice, once from 1985-1989 and then from 2005, so we seem to be here now, especially as hubby is now not moving round with his job any more... I trained as a nurse in the 80's in Birkenhead, loved nursing (I was on the last SRN course before Project 2000 came in) but went directly out to live abroad so never actually practiced... I have worked a lot with the NHS though, as a PA and now as an IT Trainer (as well as other sectors too).

I started my nursing career in the 60's way before Project 2000 was even an idea. I was practising full time for 47 years in the NHS and went through being an SRN, an RGN and finally an RN. Now I'm just and OAP!

Well done you, for staying in the NHS so long! There is a lot of discontent out there at the moment, many district nursing teams are at their wits end..... people all living longer with more complex needs, not enough staff to service their patients, and too many grumpy people knowing their rights and demanding what isn't available!

Many have retired early and are only being replaced with newly qualified who take around a year to totally get up to speed..... many teams have stopped offering ear syringing too, as they just can't do everything anymore, not enough hours in the day...

I know because I have worked with teams for weeks at a time, and you get to see it all, warts and all...

I retired in 2012 when yet another re-structering was proposed, just one too far for me having survive quite few each time a new Chief Executive took over. I haven't regretted it even though a number of my friends continue to practice. Medical advantages have moved so fast and way beyond what Aneurin Bevan could have have imagined and as you have noted demand far outstrips resources and it isn't just people living longer.

I'm glad I trained and nursed when I did, we may not have had the advances in technology younger nurses now have but at least we were able to nurse and didn't rely on machines to tell us something was wrong!!
