Hi Chrissy, welcome to Silversurfers. I'm sure that you will soon start to find your way round and will join in with topics which interest you. Lucky you living in Scarborough! My parents were married at St Mary's (near to the castle) in 1939 but moved to Leeds after the war. I had plenty of Aunts to stay with during the holidays so Scarborough was like a second home to me. I worked at the Scalby Mills cafe in 1966 after taking my 'O' levels - what an experience! We started at 8.00am and finished at 6.00pm with a 15 minute break in the morning, 30 minutes at lunch time and then another 15 minutes in the afternoon - all for the princely sum of 2/6d (12½ pence in "new" money) an hour. 🙂

Hi Carole I had a similar job when I lived in Morecambe - the tips more than made up for it though. Like you we worked 8 hours or more a day from the age of 14 haha. St Mary's is a beautiful church I have some photos of it somewhere - when I work out where to post them I will find them and post.

Tips???? Good grief - the holidaymakers in Morecambe sound far more generous than the people who came to Scarborough - I didn't get one tip in the six weeks that I worked there. Perhaps I wasn't smiley enough 🙂 St Mary's is a lovely church - I have put a few photos of the exterior on to the Showcase as, apart from an Easter service which I attended a few years ago, I have never found the church open when I have been in the vicinity. I shall look forward to seeing your photos on the Showcase.
