How Does Your Garden Grow

Many people are wanting to plant fruit and vegetables for the first time and would really benefit from any first hand knowledge from the experienced gardeners among our community.

It would be great to have any tips on preparing soil, ideas on what grows well in pots or containers, what will grow just as well with or without a greenhouse, when to plant out, when to harvest...I could go on and I'm sure there are plenty of questions many of you would like to ask!

Feel free to post any questions or advice whether you are a novice or an old hand and hopefully we'll all get to learn something new!

Any tips on how to get rid of ground elder? Apart from just digging it up of course. I've got lots and lots of it growing at the base of a fence and I'm finding it tricky to dig up.

We have been stricken with it for years. The only way to get rid of it totally is to laboriously dig every tiny bit out or it keeps coming back. Spraying with weed killer on the leaves just does not seem to work.

Thank you for your kind response Wilf. Unfortunately it sounds like I'll just have to keep digging! Ah well, it'll give me something to do I suppose...

Peppers can be a but dicey in this country, depending on the variety, and I wouldn't recommend them as a beginner's crop. You can grow almost anything in a pot, provided the pot is big enough and you have good compost (and frequent watering in hot weather). Indoors, I'd recommend basil, dwarf tomatoes or chillies (which, surprisingly, can go like the clappers once they decide they like you). If you know the variety of pepper seeds you have, you could try Googling "how to grow...". I've been gardening for 50 years and constantly look for online help (don't forget to include your area in the search). Happy trial & erroring!

A neighbour has given me some sweet pepper seeds which I would like to try and grow. I don't have a greenhouse so wondered if they would grow successfully outside? I would appreciate any tips from anyone who has grown them before.

Best to start them indoors unless you’re outside where it’s really warm. They are the prettiest plans !

Thank you Starofdavid, I think I'll follow your advice and start them off on a window sill.
