Insomnia - Any help or advice?

Well today I feel I have started to go down a very slippery slope I have started taking sleeping tablets !!! I have been really fighting this for a long time but nothing else I have tried has worked. I have bought all the over the counter products, relaxation tapes, hypnotherapy health food shop tablets. Is this an age thing? Any advice would be most welcome as an active person I am finding my life is now being affected. Dropping off when your eating out with friends is not good but it can be anywhere so embarrassing.

Hi lonemoan.
Well I wish I could sleep during the day but just not possible I have tried everything.
I have never been one to sleep for long periods when I hear people say they can sleep for 8 hours I think if only. I am not happy about sleeping tablets having worked in the NHS I am aware of the pitfalls ,they are a very low dose & as yet have not worked any magic . And now they are telling us insomniacs are more likely to have dementia that's something to look forward to charming isn't that enough to send you cuckoo.
My GP asked me if I took enough exercise I said yes, do you drink alcohol before bed (No) and I quickly said before she did I do not watch much TV of use the computer an hour before bed. She then said maybe a holiday would help sort your insomnia out, I wanted to say will the NHS pay for it. I live in the hopes that someone will have a new idea that I have not tried yet. Do you find it gets you down at times.

I have suffered for few years although I do know the reasons, im finding it very difficult to overcome without medication, I def think its age related. I try to read if I wake up stupid oclock ( 1.40am last night) my eyes start shutting then drop off, but PING my minds awake and brain is whizzing,, ????
