The Internet

It seems incredible now but I can remember a friend of mine explaining the internet as "some American invention for their military" back in about 1996 and I really did not have a clue what he was talking about! Fastfoward about two years to the late 90s and everyone was talking about the www and I can remember our connection on our home computer that was hissing and spluttering as it connected up to the web. Incredible times and it seems amazing that only about 17 years later we have such amazing websites and its on our phones etc

I have never been a driver and dont have a pension, a job
or bus pass yet so the internet has opened up my life tremendously

I agree it opens up the whole world-communications, talking to new friends, information, buying online...the list goes on and on

I spoke to a couple older than us yesterday in park both ex graduates in science and the chap was very enthusiastic about internet but the woman snapped 'Oh no I dont like it I think it is wrong!'. The internet and FB are only as wrong or right as you make it...my mother unfortunately has the same closed mind and yet I know it would save her from a lot of loneliness and depression in winter..she doesnt want to know..it's her loss.

It was a Briton who actually invented the basis of the Internet and it actually dates back to the 70's. The internet became of age in the early 90's when the language to define web pages was agreed upon by a worldwide consortium. We haven't looked back since. It was a pain in the old Dial up days but since the advent of broadband things has been much easier.

Yes I agree the internet is wonderful, especially for ordering on line, or simply just looking for just about anything you need to find answers to.

but using skype is fantastic too, as my family and I regularly skype our friend out in new Zealand , where my wife can show her anything she has made, or bought in the shops ,and they can talk as long as they want for free,

so being able to see, and speak to some one, twelve thousand miles away
is fantastic, so yes I too value and appreciate the internet very much so,.

Yes we use Skype a lot and also Facetime on our iphones to contact the Kids which is amazing to both talk to them and see them. Thirty years ago we could not even dream of such technology. My parents didn't even have a phone in the home when I was a teenager!

Hello Wilf,

yes its a far cry from 50 years ago when if we wanted to phone some one you had to know where the telephone boxes were
and hoped that they were working,
my mother never had a phone so when I did eventually get one which was a party line having a chat was not only expensive but awkward as then you never knew if some one was listening in on your conversation,.

today mobiles are a blessing for all sorts of reasons,

A pencil and paper can be used to behave like Leonardo da Vinci or to write Mein Kampf or Das Kapital. The internet is just that, multiplied a trillion times.
Having Wikiworld at my fingertips is heaven for an info-magpie like me.
It's the printing revolution all over again.
But, it's as negative as it's positive. We will struggle to control the darker aspects but it was ever thus. We must also beware of control by the powerful in terms of access and information "permitted". The possibility of two-tier net is a concern as is the dark net.
But, overall the internet is amazing.

I am a complete numpty when it come to computers but I carefully try to find my way around & have been quite successful so far. I did open a virus in the early days & that was because the box interpreted something I had typed into a search wrong that taught me my first lesson. The family made the most of it for weeks,

I think the internet is a huge force for good. Look at countries that are dictatorships-they try and stop the flow of information but its not possible especially when everyone has mobile phones and tablets as well. I am like you Jaguarjon53 I soak up information and whether its the latest football score on Bbc.co.uk or looking for ages at Wikipedia and following even more interesting links on that its opened up a huge amount of knowledge for us.
