Is retirement all that great?

I'm not convinced, been retired just over four years and I think there's something in the adage the less you do the less you want to do although I help around the house, shop, take the dog for a walk but to a certain extent there is a loss of status once you finish work, seems a slightly aimless time to me not withstanding a smashing family.

I do agree with you, I have only been retired just over a year and at first I wondered just what I had done but it has taken time for me to get a good life balance. Now I can do what I want when I want, have found interests which I now have time to enjoy.

Retirement takes time to adjust to, having a flexible lifestyle now after being tied into a career.

Enjoy your retirement we all deserve this time to have fun after working all our lives.

you are doing well for being retired only just over a year, i guess i miss the framework and social contact as well as having interesting work. i'm one of those people who never planned for retirement and hoped to stay working albeit part time but, in the end, it came down to whether older people who could get a pension should go as opposed to younger people with mortgages so you can't argue with that.

Now I do miss the framework of a routine and colleagues in that respect my world has shrunk. There was no choice for me, I would have liked to work part time but the employers wanted full time or nothing.

I’m lucky where I live there is a lot of things to do in retirement, it just finding what you are interested in.

I tend to agree having been retired nearly 3 years. But life they say is what you make it. I'm moving on Fri. and hope to find new interests and make new friends, I do have friends in the town so can build on that.
Of course I 'm not suggesting you move but just to decide what you would like to do and then take steps to make it happen.

thanks jean and ecarg - moving is something that we were contemplating as my wife's mother isn't well so to be nearer but, in the end, the wife's brother retired early with redundancy and went to live up there which saved the day. it did however make me aware of the cost of moving these days, if you are not downsizing then there's a huge amount of money that you won't see again, mostly stamp duty but solicitoes and estate agents take a toll too.

Having been retired 5 years I have embraced the change in status. I now do what I want to do when I feel like doing it and I am just as busy as when I was working but with none of the stress and long hours. Enjoy the change, it is your reward for a life of work.
