JAZZ and/or CLASSICAL - What are your most striking concert memories?

I remember seeing the blind reed player Roland Kirk at Ronnie Scott's once.

He was playing a solo with his back to the band, when Percy Heath turned up out of nowhere and changed places with Roland's bass player. To me it looked like a seamless changeover.

At the end, Roland, who can't have seen what happened, stepped up to the mike and said, "Yeah, I've always wanted to play with Percy Heath." The crowd, as the saying goes, went wild.

I remember, some years ago now, attending a Classical concert in Bristol when, at the finale of the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, representatives from the Armed Forces had been charged with the firing of the cannons' effects. I do not know what charges they used, the sound was great, but slowly from the off-side of the platform the whole orchestra disappeared into a huge cloud of smoke which spread gradually through the whole auditorium, to the mixed horror and amusement of both the Orchestra and the audience. Naturally it was some time before the concert could be resumed! Certainly a night to remember!
