Jill Gascoine

Sad to read that Jill Gascoine is in the late stages of Alzheimer's disease - I used to love her in The Gentle Touch and C.A.T.S. Eyes when I was younger. Her partner, the actor Alfred Molina, has been speaking about it - it must be so awful watching a loved one slip away from you like this.

You're right there jeany, we should cherish every day.

A couple of my friends have mums who are in the early stages of Alzheimer's and I cannot decide which is worse - losing a loved one when they die suddenly or watching them die slowly whilst they are still alive - which is what Alzheimer's is really.

Very sad, but like you Lionel I can sympathise, and understand. The mind and body can only take so much.

My Grandmother had Alzheimer's. She lived in London and then Kent and we lived in Scotland. She was a widow as my Grandfather had died long before I was born. We'd driven all the way to Kent to see her and my last memory of her is running up to her front door, full of excitement at the prospect of seeing her. As her front door was open when we arrived, my father said 'Just go in and surprise her', so I did but she had no idea who I was and thought I was a burglar, threw things at me and screamed her head off! I was just a child at the time and was deeply distressed by it.

Many years later, after my own parents had died, I found lots of old photos in my parents' house of me as a very young child with my Grandmother, clearly having a wonderful time in her company, so I treasure those photos as proof that she really did love me before the Alzheimer's. It's a truly terrible disease.

So sad and you're right Mels, it must be awful for those close. Many years ago a friend of mine was diagnosed with the disease and what made it worse was he was a Geriatrician and thus knew exactly what would happen. I think most of us will be touched by the disease at some point. Both you and jeanymay have the right idea, smile and cherish each day.
