Is lack of relaxation damaging our health?

Recently, I heard a programme on the radio, the gist was that constant background noise pollution can damage your health and even shorten your life. It simply isn't relaxing that's for sure. I can remember being at boarding school in Kent, ages ago of course and it was just silent at night and at times during the day, not even aircraft. It is very difficult to find peace and quiet these days.

I practice meditation and yoga daily, and strive for as much peace as possible, its not always achieveable though.Last summer,I was on a day off work, and planned to do some peaceful things in my garden. However that soon changed when my neighbour, decided to do some work in his own (Building a wall)and had his radio blaring outside from 8.30am-6pm.I had little choice but to go out that day to gain peace.
I think people are scared of peace. Why?Because they don't like to face their thoughts.Anything.....from phone addiction, too much time spent on laptops, blasting their ears with music, watching tv.....people are afraid to sit still and do nothing. You can control your inside noise within your own home, but unfortunately have little to no control what noise goes on outside your home.

like your reply Yodama, thoughtful as ever - what i take from your comments is that, to some extent at least, you make your own 'peace and quiet'.

at 67, nearly 68, i am a motorbike rider, old guy, old motorbike - it's not like a car, you are out in the open, smelling smells and tipping about on bends, makes you feel like you are 16 again and a great form of 'escape'

escape from jobs i should be doing but also just the sheer row at weekend, the flying club is in full swing, the estate is jammed up with motors, often poorly parked...ironic that i make a nuisance of myself riding around in the countryside, villages and small towns then.

one thing 'bikers' do is wear ear plugs, they don'y totally cut noise but damp it, the idea is to protect the rider from wind noise at speed, on a motorway for example - anyway i sometimes use these just in the garden to help give a bit of quiet.

the voice of common sense, thanks. i think maybe a holiday would help. And you are right about getting used to environmental noise, on one of my motorbike rides i ended up sitting outside a cafe in monmouth - there was the chatter of people nearby but something was missing... there were no aircraft, it seemed weird but also lovely not to have the wretched things either at high level or, the lower, private stuff. One of our holidays was in wales in recent years, inland from new quay, you won't believe it, was too quiet, a bit creepy in fact.

yes i can remember from my working life that farmers would just leave engines running for ages. my main grudge is that we are near a flying club used by londoners, the light aircraft concerned are constrained by a number of bigger airports in the wider area so they flock to the airspace where they don't have to seek special permissions, we seem to be in the centre of that 'free' space.
