Law, Order and Punishment

I have chosen what is really a wide topic but for those of us that remember the 'fifties' and compare it with today's enforcement, something is sadly amiss. In the 1950's which I will refer to as the 'old days' there was not extensive "honour amongst thieves" but they did have their own standards coshing and robbing old people was strictly taboo, not so today. What do you think drives this change in people. Is it the constant quest for money driven by manufacturers and politics, lapse of any moral fibre, drugs, the advertising that makes them want?

I think modern society has a number of contributory factors that have and continue to alter the values that existed in the 'old days' of the 50's and early 60's. The mass marketing of fashionable goods particularly to young people is a factor when you consider the number of them that simply can't afford what it constantly put in front of them by the media (trainers, technological items and so on). They can't afford it, 'want' and 'need' it for credibility so some resort to crime though which they obtain the items or access to them. The alterations in family structures is huge and so to I believe is the process of gentrification where 'local' people are forced to move fro area their families have lived in for years and the vacuum filled by rich 'outsiders'. Community becomes an historical factor that no longer exists in many parts now. Finally I think political correctness harnessed to massive budgetary reductions in policing is a major factor in the responses to and control of crime

I think its probably down to a number of issues. Drugs is one of them as drug addicts can become a one man crime wave. People have more to steal and there is a lot of cyber crime. The issue with family breakdown as well as there are so many divorces and one parent families which means that many boys especially do not have a role model. The greatest cause of crime though I think is simple lack of discipline. We should enforce much longer prison sentences and deal with habitual criminals like the USA does i.e. 3 strikes and you are out of society for good.

Wilf, if you haven't read it, I think you would enjoy Jon Gaunt's book, Gaunty's Best of British. I just finished it and agree with much of what he says, if not always his way of expressing it.
