Lets get together and feel alright!

Just been reading about how vastly mixed the feelings are on retirement and how people are coping - or not. Can Silversurfers all over the country not physically get together locally to solve the problem? All that knowledge, talent and energy would make a fantastic workforce, friendship circle, support group with everyone contributing what and how they could. Anyone up for it?

Sounds a good idea but in what area are you living?

Sorry you are too far away to meet for coffee but there seem to be lots of other members in your area!

Having seen my parents, who are only 20 years older, deteriorate, I'd like to take it a step further. Forming a group to create a co-housing scheme, with space for future Carers would keep the dreaded care home at bay. I'm thinking seaside abandoned hotel to be refurbed.
However, I think this forum is a much safer, anonymous support system for most.

Sounds an excellent plan to me but isn't what you describe sheltered housing ?

My experience is that as much as you think you have prepared for retirement there are certain elements that creep up on you unexpectedly. Getting together in 'real life' with others for coffee or a chat is a good idea. It happens with people from another forum I'm on, simply by finding people in the same area and agreeing to meet somewhere. I've met some lovely people that way!

How would this work? Would we have a group for each county or would it be one location that everyone went to? I wouldn't mind meeting for lunch and a chat once a month then we could form local interest groups.

Yes would need to be local groups , there are probably already groups of older people meeting up like lunch clubs , know my local Salvation Army run one regularly . However this isn't for me . Something informal where people could go for a chat and meet new people from their own area would be good.

A really lovely idea but too large a project to achieve I feel sorry to say.Logistically a nightmare to do so we can just carry on using this wonderful website.

Really struggling with the thought of retirement coming soon. How is everyone coping?
Response from Pam1960 made on 25th Jan 2016 08:23:24
I took early retirement before Christmas and am trying to get into some kind of routine. I have joined an exercise class but apart from housework that is pretty much it. I live baking but don't want to spend my time making cakes as I am trying to lose weight not put it on. I like the idea of local meetings/get togethers. We are a long time retired (hopefully) and I would like to make it as enjoyable as possible. I already miss my work colleagues maybe part time work or volunteering is the way foward

Sounds a brilliant idea , would need someone willing to take the lead in arranging publicity, venues , Also would be good to include people who are isolated but do not have access to Silversurfers.I am a member of Time Bank which run various groups (craft walking etc) but a group to chat and exchange ideas whilst making friends would be great.
