Made redundant at the age of 50
Watch this postGood Morning Folks - I hope you're all well. I was made redundant about 6 months ago, at the age of 50. I have always done office work and have more than 20 years' experience of general office administration and accounts/finance work. I have joined various employment agencies in an attempt to find work, but have not had any success. I have even thought of becoming self employed, but haven't got the confidence of going it alone, and not sure if I could get enough customers for my business to survive. Could anybody be kind enough to suggest what I could do in order to increase my chances of finding employment? My wife and I are having sleepless nights about this !! Thank You

the weird thing is, I get re-hired at a higher pay rate , but as temporary staff.

I took a driving job after I retired and find it really enjoyable. Good Luck
From being an indoor worker he became an outdoor man and loves it. Look outside the box for something completely different perhaps. The days of office working are gone. I found that out myself 20 years ago at the age o f56. Good luck.

I think it's going to be difficult finding another job at my age and in the current climate. I'm not sure if my pensions will be enough to live on. I'm thinking a part time job would help but again in the current climate I think that would be difficult to find. Just not sure what to do.
I've always worked in an office, now I feel like doing a job I enjoy and am passionate about.

Like many folk on here, I was made redundant in June 2017. A long story and a huge 'farce', as basically the men wanted a younger female in the job.
Anyway, after 12 months, I am still looking for that permanent job, but in the meantime, lost my home due to the poor Universal Credit 'reviews'. So now stay with family.
However, I can also concur about ageism in the working world being rife and much more.
Plus, having also applied for over 400 jobs in the last 12 months, I am now looking at returning to university to study a completely different subject, at the grand old age of 51.
I am single so have no support from a partner, have no more savings and unfortunately no dependants. Thus, what might appear to be an approach of 'the world is my oyster', still does not feel comfortable, as according to general society - I should be married, at least three children, live in a suburban semi detached and be looking forward to retirement.
Life has given me many 'curve balls'......but I still keep going and have absolutely no idea what the future holds, but it has to be better than the last 18 months in a job and company which I hated. And which very nearly finished me off with the stress.
I'm not looking for sympathy, just my next chapter in life............so my heart goes out to you all, if you are looking for a job over the age of 50. It's damned difficult to get a 20 to 30 year old in some HR department, to understand that we all need jobs, no matter how old you are. And EVERY working life skill, is fully transferable.
How are you getting on with your job search? I know from first hand how traumatic this can be .... Ageism is still alive and kicking even tho lots are in denial about that. So I set up my own business which has been a lot more liberating in all sorts of ways.

Prehaps you could work part time for yourself and part time for an employer .
There'as lots of help available it's just knowing where to find it ,suggestions as Carole AH but also try your'e local council re becoming self employed.

First of all - sorry to hear about your redundancy and the stress which it is causing. I don't want to state the obvious so presume that you are registered at your local Job Centre and that you use their Universal Jobmatch service which is available on-line. Although many companies prefer you to complete their job application forms instead of submitting a CV it is vital that your CV is up-to-date, honest and covers your work history in chronological order so that you can apply for jobs which don't require an application form. You should not have to state your date of birth or give the year in which you passed your GCSEs - this is to prevent age discrimination although it doesn't take much brain power to work out an approximate age of an applicant from the years they have worked in various jobs. Have you got skills other than admin and finance which could be utilised eg a love of gardening or DIY would be an asset to anyone applying for a job in a garden centre or somewhere like B&Q; a complete change from what you have been doing but I tend to think that it is always easier to get another job if you are already working. I hope this has been of some help - I know what a blow to the self-esteem redundancy can be. Good luck!
