Mental Health - carer's support

I am a Carer of two adult sons, both of whom suffer with paranoid schizophrenia. For the last 30 years approximately, I have had to cope with a lot of emotions (both theirs and mine) and numerous occasions when they had tried to take their lives.

I'm wondering if any other older age group on here is in the same situation? I also work towards taking away the stigma of having a serious mental health condition. I've been involved with the mental health system for most of these years and have seen it deteriorate, due to so many people now with these conditions. Strangely enough, the Carers can't seem to be reached to offer the support they could potentially get (in my area anyway).

We all hear about Carer's Rights now and every organisation seem to offer groups to support us - but I'm beginning to think it amounts to 'too many cooks in the kitchen'. If anyone needs emotional support, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. kind regards, P

Yes I have just posted a message about our plight of looking after our son.
It really is a hopeless dilemma and we sympathise wholeheartedly. Take care and stay safe.

Sorry, the final sentence is a bit ambiguous. It is really helpful that there is support here for people who may be experiencing similar situations.

Hello,

I am a carer for my (19 YO) adult son who has profound anxiety disorders and I provide support for his (21 YO) brother who lives in supported lodgings and has autism and psychosis.

My problem is that my youngest son lives with me but will not see the GP or seek help and will not apply for benefits or seek work. His problems with anxiety have continued since he stopped attending school at 14.

I work from home, but sometimes it is difficult juggling work commitments with de-escalation for my youngest and liaising between my eldest and his support team.

I find support on online forums, so it is nice to meet others who are in a similar position.

I have an adult son with schizophrenia. I am surprises nobody has posted about this so far. I go to groupds on facebook. It has been about 15 years fro me. It's bad. How old are your sons? Having two sounds pretty bad.

Hi JodyG, Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about your son. Yes, it is surprising that nobody has written - maybe we're the only ones? Either that or many people feel that they can't admit to having to cope with a mental health situation! My sons are 42 and 38 now. Luckily medication, once sorted is helping, but there are still blips along the way.
Do you find the groups on Facebook help you to cope?
