Money Saving Tips

Having just watched ‘A Super Scrimpers’ Merry Christmas’ on Channel 4 I believe there are dozens of us who have the experience and the wisdom to save money any which way we can. So, how about it? Not just Christmas of course – any time, on anything. Like to start the ball rolling?

Absolutely brilliant warhammer! Hand on heart can truly say do all of those and now so automatic no longer think of them as money saving - which of course they are - just a way of life. Thank you for reminding me and setting it out for all to see and hopefully benefit from; even if they only adopt one item. No point in getting older if you don't get wiser too.

Stop listening to Emporer's Clothes selling tactics - do you really need that thing they are flogging as essential to life? 9 times out of 10 the answer will be no. Also, when shopping, check out the cost per kilo price on the tickets as this really shows the cheaper item - you can get 4 things with the same label, but the cost per kilo could be different on all of them no matter what the size. It's such a con and you need to keep your wits about you.

We do a bit for a market recearch group and it takes about 5 minutes a weeki but we earn about £150.00 a year. In the last four years we have had a new dishwasher a new washing machine and a new fridgefreezer and I have not had to put my hand in my pocket for any of them.
Is that saving money??

Grow your own fruit and veg!Packets of seeds are so cheap and can usually last longer than a year.Stock pile marked down toiletries and pantry items, freezer goods.Use Freecycle, and your local Facebook for sale/free group to buy items. For gift giving, buy out of season as alot of stores have blue cross sales.(I Xmas shop in Aug each year).Same with Xmas cards/tags/wrap,buy straight after Xmas to save alot of money.
In summer we use a bucket in the shower to collect excess water when we shower each day.We then use this water for our garden/allotment.If I cook a roast dinner for example I make 4 dinners instead of 2.I then freeze the extra two to reheat in the microwave.I use this for alot of dinners,as it saves time and money, especially when you are working.
Walk or ride a bike into town if possible. Its better for your health and free.

Make your money go further if you shop online by using Cash back sites for items like Holidays or insurance, it costs nothing to join but you can expect extra sometimes for items you would have bought anyway.

My opinion to save real money is
Insulation
Insulation
Insulation
Now is the time to start, make sure that your loft is insulated to a higher standard than the minimum and then look at where you can make it better.
Where possible have cavity wall insulation installed, that can save you a fortune over time, if not look at other forms of interior insulation.
Stop trying to save pennies and try to save pounds.

:-)Good for you Polly, keep it up! My scrooge ieas are: Cutting the toothpaste (or cream) tube in half when getting empty, scooping out any from the top half into the bottom half and using the top half to make a lid for the easy to get add remainder by squeezing it into the middle to get it to fit. Batch cooking to use the whole oven and heat. Then stock the freezer with the goodies. (Make cakes in bread tins so can cut into slices and fit into the oblong boxes and into the freezer easily). Food offers - cook and freeze. Bulk buy and share costs with friends - large sacks of spuds are particularly good for this saving. Buy clothes on Ebay and at Oxfam online - don't be proud. Have bought brand new for fraction of the cost. If something is brand new with tags then it is brand new: don't forget that coat you paid hundreds for had probably been tried on by a dozen people before you! Make charity shops you friend for jigsaws, books, DVDs etc and then pass them on to friends. Search comparison sites and change suppliers - you don't owe them any loyalty. Get a cash back credit card and pay it off in full every month. Read the newspapers for free online (only The Times demands a subscription). Use any vouchers you can - keep them in your bag or pocket so you have them to hand. Look for deals on the net before going to London say - often have them combined with rail ticket. Don't buy fancy cleaning stuff - vinegar, ammonia, bicarb and a cheap cream cleaner will tackle most problems. Admit might want antibacterial spray and limescale remover, but not all these other items - remember they make fantastic claims and like face creams are only 'chemicals' in attractive packaging.

That's right, Sally Ann. I do buy from EBay, in fact I have some shoes that I'm looking at and a pair I've bought. Also for my daughters wedding I bought a lovely silk 3 piece suit at EBay. At Oxfam online, you don't have to pay again after paying one £3.99 postage, and they don't mind you buying, or trying, lots of things whether you keep them or send back, without paying return postage. I recently bought some cashmere sweaters, about 5, they were great, and I bought a blue raincoat with a warm lining and, because I have had a Stroke, it is long enough to keep me dry and a hat to keep my hair dry, whilst I walk with a stick. Just remembered..... I used to have a phenomenal memory, now it's just a memory. This is money saving, but also a health item.Talcum powder - hard to find now and there is a reason for that: it contains small harmful particles just like asbestos and really should be avoided. The powder found in health food shops is cornstarch - cornflour to you and me. So all you need to do is buy a cheap packet of cornflour in the supermarket. Pour it into your nice powder bowl, spray the puff (on the TOP - not on the surface touching the powder or will form lump) with your favouite perfume. Put on the lid and wai 😉 t for the perfume to infuse the cornflour. Eh Voila posh body powder for pence!

Hi Sally Ann I'm all for saving money, I go for vouchers, there are lots of site's where you can print off voucher's. Other site's I visit are ones where you can get freebs but one of the best things I do is to haggle, I have to be pretty desperate to pay full price for something.
The other thing I do, much to my daughters consternation, is whilst walking, shopping ect I automatically scan the floor, particularly around shops, for dropped coins and in the last 3 weeks I've picked up over £6.00, 3 1pound coins, 3 50 pence pieces and various silver and bronze coins, it all mounts up and I put it into a pot in my kitchen and now that's over half full, I cant understand peoples attitude do they have so much they can throw it away............my hubby says oh its only pennies and 2 pence pieces but as I say it all mounts up.

The other thing people can do is to put their odd pennies into one of those money box tins that you have to use a can opener to get at the money, I've got two one with bronze in and one with silver (5p's) in you'll be surprised how fast they fill up and you don't miss the coins
