Great selection of music, Yodama, Just listening to Pumeza Matshikiza on YouTube as I type - beautiful lady and wonderful voice. I love Montserrat Caballe and Freddie Mercury singing "Barcelona". I wonder if Amira Willighagen will make it as an adult opera singer - she has got an incredible voice for a child. Have you listened to "Judex" from Gounod's "Mors et Vita"? It's a majestic piece of music.

Freddie had an amazing voice and it went so well with Montserrat on that track

Super recording, Yodama. I didn't actually conduct but did la-la along with the gentlemen in the choir. You should hear our U3A Singing for Fun choir singing Verdi's 'Va Pensiero' ...... or perhaps not - but we do enjoy ourselves ๐Ÿ™‚

I forgot to mention Kathleen Ferrier - what a voice

Hi,
Liked your joke, Yodama! In my house I can sing as though no-one is listening and dance as though no-one is watching so Luciano just has to put up with me - can be lonely at times but, being an introvert, I quite like my own company. So pleased that you are emerging, butterfly-like from your chrysalis stage. Singing is great - I don't read music {but can follow the ups and downs ๐Ÿ™‚ } and when I was asked if I was a soprano I had to say "yes" because they usually get "the tune" whilst the contraltos do all the fancy bits and really need to be able to read the music for their parts. Fascinating that you used to sing in operas and operettas. What are your favourites? Just listening to Kathleen Ferrier now, ThePrimate; you are correct - she has got a beautiful voice.so start practising, Yodama. Your 'cracked contralto' could soon soar again.

I've recently bought Ferrier's 'The EMI years' which has most of Orphius & Eurydice' on it. Really very good.

I like your comment about vibration & music Yodama. Some music that I love (eg Isao Tomita) puts other's teeth on edge. I love Joan Baez but my ears can't take her high notes. Perhaps we're more susceptible to the vibrations within the music than we realise. (or I might just be bonkers)

PS Great selection of music ๐Ÿ™‚

So you don't like cats? ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a listen to Tomita's Daphnis & Chloe

Ooooh dear! Showing my age - where are my ear-plugs ๐Ÿ™‚ Actually, I do like cats - just not in my garden lurking under the bird table!

Thanks for listening and giving it a try Yodama, I love his Firebird suite and the Debussy collection (Snowflakes are dancing) but I accept they're not to everyone's taste. His 4 channel remastering of his earlier 1975 'The Planets' is amazing. Sadly he died last year aged 84 and recording up to the last. A very humble & modest man as can be seen from this interview (with subtitles)

That is quite an eclectic bunch of people you listen to and I have to admit that I haven't heard of half of them! ๐Ÿ™‚ I was a teenager in the early 60s so I like most of the groups from that time plus Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison, Freddy Mercury and Abba. I also love the pipes and drums so a visit to the Edinburgh Tattoo always brings a tear to my eye as I watch the bands marching across the drawbridge. Another great love is opera although I do draw the line at Wagner's Ring Cycle - listening to that is a feat of endurance not enjoyment. One of the things on my 'bucket list' is to attend the New Year's Day Concert from Vienna so I shall have to start saving up!

Jussi Bjorling - wonderful Tenor, I forgot to add him to the list ๐Ÿ™‚ I have many of his recordings - recently bought a recording of Tosca with him and Leonard Warren. (Warren's Te Deum on this recording is amazing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCNlZ_xbQnU if you want to listen)

Thank-you for the link to Leonard Warren - I had never heard of him but what a super voice and then Jussi Bjorling and Robert Merrill singing the duet from The Pearl Fishers - heaven!
Response from ThePrimate Original Poster made on 1st May 2017 13:08:20
The Pearl Fishers duet was the first piece of opera I ever heard. My Mum was a big fan of theirs

I think my earliest recollection, as a child, of hearing an opera (actually an operetta) was hearing 'Vilja' from the "The Merry Widow". It was being performed at the Open Air Theatre in Scarborough and with the bedroom windows open and the wind in the right direction I could lie in bed and listen to the music! ๐Ÿ™‚ Renรฉe Fleming sings it beautifully. Moving on quite a few years and a visit to Leeds Grand Theatre to see "Cav and Pag" sealed my love of operatic music. Nowadays, the price of a good seat at the theatre is exorbitant so I go to the cinema and see productions there for a fraction of the price - the atmosphere isn't as good but I've seen some wonderful performances including "Turandot" and "Madame Butterfly" from Sydney harbour side.
Response from ThePrimate Original Poster made on 2nd May 2017 21:30:12
The Open Air Theatre is still popular with concert goers. I have managed to source several full operas on CD featuring Bjorling, Warren, Milanov and others - they're pretty magical even tho' they were recorded half a life time ago
