Need a Life

I'm 68, retired and live in Alabama (US). Hoping to find people with similar interests and maybe get some cyber-friends and discover new interests through the chat room.

When I retired about 6 years ago I moved back to my hometown to take care of my elderly parents. My father had a stroke and my mother was diagnosed with cancer and all I could think about was being beside them and helping them through the medical crisis they were going through.

I quickly found myself taking care of my younger sister as well; she was diagnosed with an uncommon form of cancer. It seems that while trying to take care of my family and keep everyone's spirits up that I've neglected myself.

Apparently just getting out of the house to buy groceries, go to doctor appointments and medical test appointments isn't enough to keep one connected to the outside world.

Since I can't get out for any 'my time' I thought I'd invite you into 'my time'.

Hi you have kindly invited us into "your time " but you really must be a very unselfish person to do what you do.

I feel since I divorced, I don't have any friends now. I really don't know how that happened? So I understand your isolation, I am a very outgoing female of 69, but I am very interested in people, travel and all things nice, What do people do in Alabama do for hobbies or to meet others ? Sueper

Along the Gulf Coast there are two places to go where you're sure to meet someone. The beaches and the bars. But that's all for the younger kids. Kids our age? Have no idea unless you have luck at a church you attend. I'm probably not the one to ask anyway. But I have wondered myself how I'd go about meeting people my age. There are a couple of senior community centers in Mobile but they aren't convenient to where I live and some are in unsafe areas so going alone would not be an option. Several years ago I lived in a small town about 2 hours north of where I live now. I was looking for things to do or places to go in the town so I asked some people I had gotten to know for some suggestions. The reply? The best thing to do in this town to have fun is to go to another town.

I envy you being able to travel. I traveled a little when I was younger. Not just in the States, but have been to Europe several times. Loved learning about the cultures and history and foods in different countries. Had hoped to go to Asia at some point but hasn't happened yet. Going on a cruise sounds interesting to me too. A cruise is definitely on my bucket list!

Thanks for that but I have never travelled to U.S.A and yet I would love to, I was told my father was American, but don't know any more than that. I have done a couple of cruises, Independence of the Seas was a fabulous med cruise (American ship ) and an Italian liner but flew to Milan and long coach ride to cruise, so only 2 cruises so far. I would love to travel more but not alone, its

What part of the world are you from and how is the weather there now? I can't wait until summer is over but I don't welcome Christmas this year. Last year my brother was buried a week before Christmas and it was hard through the holidays. This year my sister won't be with us either so it's going to be worse. Depending on how my parents feel, I may have my son and daughter, their spouses and children over. I've even got 3 great-grandchildren. Maybe having a house full of kids and laughter will help through the season.

You're right, it is a lot worse these days than when we were young. I remember the chances I used to take, like walking through alleys for shortcuts, driving when I had too much to drink. Stupid things then...even more of a risk now days.

I've heard living in Spain is wonderful. I've never been there but I've been to France, England and Holland. Considered moving to Holland at one time but wasn't sure I wanted to move that far away from the grandchildren.

I live in Birmingham UK, its very noisy as I live near the airport, but winter it does calm down. I do understand the dread of Christmas but I have buried 2 brothers also not that we ever had a fabulous Christmas or new year together. I have a sister and brother but aren't close. we even live a distance away and that suits most of the time. I am alone here now. I enjoy gardening and decorating, not brilliant at either, but I have a few friends that advise ......lol !!! its getting to be a bit cooler here now, sun is shining but chilly mornings and darker evenings are on the horizon, I hate the cold weather,
