NHS Student Bursaries

Right now the Government is consulting about plans to axe the bursary for NHS students in 2017. Instead NHS student nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and others will have to take out loans to cover £9,000 tuition fees and maintenance costs every year. Because of the intensity of the course and clinical placements (student nurses and midwives can work 12.5 long shifts) they find it difficult to get regular paid work like other university students and rely on their bursary to aid them through the course. They work in hospitals and other health care settings during some of their training, so basically it means they may be taking out a loan to pay their own salaries! What are peoples thoughts on ending NHS bursaries thereby bring NHS students in line with other university students which may mean they to will also end up with large student debt?

Like so many things the Government is doing at the moment, this is an ill thought out doctrinaire policy.. We will of course end up with ever fewer nurses and will have to steal them from developing countries as we are already doing. Really praiseworthy and something to make us proud (i don't think!)

It's all part of this Tory government's agenda to run the NHS down, all ready for their rich pals to jump in. I'm sickened at the way this country is going. Has anyone noticed the brand spanking new hospitals being built now? Our local hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire is like a five star hotel, hmmm, makes you wonder does it not? I wouldn't like the 'vultures' to have to spend any money out of their own very rich pockets when they take over! Sorry if I sound cynical, that's because this government has made me this way

I have never understood the need for nurses to have degrees anyway, I thought compassionate care was their main career criterion, unless they go on to become nurse practitioners who obviously need extra training to enable them to make diagnoses and administer treatment etc., and I agree with Jeanmark that they shouldn't be taking out loans to cover training fees and leading them into debt.
What a good way to discourage people from becoming nurses.

I have to disagree with you with regard to nurses requiring degrees, they are no longer doctors hand maidens. Todays health care is so complex you do need people who are able to function at that level but who are also compassionate and caring. Nurse Practitioners are often expected to be educated to masters level to allow them to function at that higher level. However, an experienced nurse who has kept themselves up to date remains an asset.

The Bursary for NHS students relates to nurses, midwives and allied health professionals - your Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists etc. it isn't just nurses.
