Ocean cruise or River cruise of Europe

Looking for thoughts if you have taken both. I've cruised with Royal Carribean, but not river cruises. Looking for advice.

Have done lots of both, and although it's a generalisation, on ocean cruising it's the ship that's the destination but on river cruising it's the destination that's the destination. River cruising looks initially to be more expensive but the price usually includes all excursions and drinks with lunch and dinner, so once you have paid the fare there is little else to pay for. On ocean cruises you will often be docked some way away from the city but on river cruises you will often be moored in the city centre. It' s east to hop off and explore, even after dinner, and there's never a queue to disembark. Also with far fewer passengers, river cruising is more sociable. Of course there are far fewer facilities on a river boat but as you are in the centre of things and excursions are included then it doesn't really matter.

Whether or not river cruising is going to suit you will be linked to what your likes/dislikes are, what you are hoping to get out of your trip and many other aspects. With river cruising your excursions tend to be included so it's not an issue whether or not hoping off locally is the same as it can sometimes be when ocean cruising, So long as you have a good travel agent to advise you who will guide you through the process you will be fine. If you'd like to chat further or like any more advice don't hesitate to contact me. Francesca. FB TRAVEL LTD.

I have done many ocean cruises and only one river cruise and enjoyed both but my candid opinion is you get more for your money with an ocean cruise.

We have only been on one Cruise years ago and it was good value for money. Friends of ours go on cruises all the time. They wait until the last minute and get some incredible deals. Last year they had a cruise round the Pacific for 37 days with flights to and from Los Angeles for £1500 each. Its a lot of money but for a cruise like that with all food for a month and visiting all the amazing islands they did its amazing

I have done both[more ocean than river] and have found that there is very little to do whilst gliding down the Rhine etc. but when docking it is so much more pleasant to explore the towns and villages on the waterfront.Ocean cruising I have found much to do onboard before docking. The actual docking experience is not so good and in the main the towns and cities are not portside so transport has to be obtained or pay exorbitant money to the cruise line to pre book tours.
Word of warning about river cruise boats - check the cabin sizes before booking !!
