Pension shortfall or no pension?

Hello, as a new member to this group I am interested in chatting to people who either have a pension shortfall, or no pension at all.

What are your experiences?

Are you struggling to make ends meet or do you want more so you can enjoy life?

With interest rates at an all time low our savings are not making us anything, sometimes we need to do something different to get the result we want.

I may be able to help. Do leave your thoughts and maybe we can have a chat.

Hi Luluzulu - Obviously I don't know where you live, but if you are anywhere near a university ring them up and ask to speak to someone in Human Resources. Then ask them a) which agency they use for temporary work or b) if they have a bank of temporary workers and how do you get on it. If a) get yourself with that agency and it should lead you to temporary jobs in all sorts or departments. When I was in your situation (and Boy, do I sympathise!) this was my saviour. I was offered three jobs - none of which I wanted, and clung on until I was lucky enough to meet someone at the uni who had a friend who was looking to fill a vacancy that was just up my street. So, sometimes it's a case of being in the right place at the right time, but if you move within an organisation like a university you're optimising your chances of another job. Also, when there was nothing at the uni the agency could some times find me work elsewhere - great for the CV. The very, very best of luck.

I agree with you Elysee. In 2020 many pensioners are still going through the same problems and struggles.

Yes indeed, there are many pensioners really struggling. I get so angry when I hear on the news how well off pensioners are now. Maybe some are, but not all of us were lucky enough to have a job with a private pension scheme. Also, if you were unfortunate enough to have lost your job at any time, and were forced to live on your savings for a while, you soon found that the savings, which took so long to build up, went down pretty quickly.

For info to get partners 10% on their allowance transferred to the main partners income, I have done so and will be getting the income tax reduction. Visit https://www.gov.uk/apply-marriage-allowance not many elderly couples know about this.

Terryv you ask about struggling to make ends meet! Struggling is a mild way to describe what I have been going through since losing my job a year ago. I lost my home, my car, my daughter (just finished school and I had to throw her out because I couldn't afford to keep her any longer!) ... and came close to suicide on more than one occasion. Fortunately I am now in a Housing Association flat (secured through much angst and having to use all my powers of persuasion, finally successful after approaching the local MP's office), but have to live on only Jobseekers' Allowance which is very hard. I am constantly penniless, and wake up every morning with the wish in my head that I could LIVE, not merely survive!
I am surrounded by elderly neighbours in the same boat, but at least most of them are of pensionable age and have all the benefits that go with that status. I am told that I fall into a "grey area" (forgive the pun) ... ie. I am not yet 60 (though close), a few years off pension, no disabilities and no dependents, so there is little or no help available.
I manage to just keep my head above water, but at the moment having sleepless nights about my electric bill, which is overdue, and am constantly cold because I can't afford to feed the gas meter card for heating. Roll on summer!
I believe there are many people like me out there, living in fear of the future and not knowing where to turn. Also, a measure of pride in being forced to turn to anyone at all. It is mortifying to have to write pleading letters to creditors. One has to live like a hermit because being sociable might result in having to spend money you do not have!
Sorry to be so depressing, but I thought it would be good to join this forum and let of a little of the anxiety, and perhaps find others to commiserate with. Throughout all my travails, the internet has been my lifeline, and I would starve rather than give up my broadband connection! That is, as long as my poor aging laptop will keep going!
Would love to hear from anyone in their late 50s who is in a similar position. 🙂
