Pre-existing Health Conditions Travel Insurance

Hi 🙂 Am going on the trip of a lifetime next summer to see my eldest marry in The Rockies! I am a nervous traveler, have never done long haul, and have booked the first leg of the trip by ship as a long haul flight scares me to death. Can anyone recommend a good medical insurance for pre-existing health conditions? I have to take medication for High Blood Pressure and Auto-Immune Hep 🙁 I have never been to USA and am fretting about it all a lot. Any wisdom gratefully received 🙂

Hi, like comment below try Staysure. We used them last year for trip to Arizona and found them reasonable compared with other quotes we had for my husband which were Ott. I don't envy going by sea, I like to get there fast then have more time to spend in the place I am going to to e pore. we fly to Vancouver on a regular basis using Canadian Affair, sounds like you are going as far as Calgary, for the Rockies, the flight time isn't that bad, 8/9 hours approx. And a lot quicker than by sea. Presume if you are going by sea you are going to New York then either flying or getting train? Canada and USA are great places and travelling is easy, you will love Canada, the scenery is fantastic and the people very welcoming. Don't worry, you will have a great time.

Thanks for taking time to reply.
Sorry have been offline awhile due to life pressures.
We are sailing out and flying back - visiting New York for a couple of nights, then flying to Denver for a couple before joining the rest of the wedding party in Estes Park for five days.
Rassurances that travel when out there is easy is much appreciated - am not well travelled and very nervous

Think I'm pressing the wrong buttons .... lost my reply!
Am going by sea because am nervous of long haul flight - figure if I collolopse on the way back at least I'll be home 😉
Going on a big ship has been a dream since seeing my Nan off on a World Cruise as a kid. Have often looked at the big ships from a harbour but this is my first time sailing on one.

We're staying in New York for a couple of nights, then flying to Denver for a couple, and getting a car hire to spend 5 days on a ranch near Estes Park.

Reassuring that travel will be easy when we get there - am very nervous!

I travel to the USA regularly, and use Staysure for my insurance.I also have pre-existing conditions, which pushes the cost up, but it's worth giving them a call.

Hi Gertgert06
Thanks for the recommendation 🙂
May I ask if you've ever had any call to use them and if so what their response was like?
Had a quick look at their pages and see the screening asks when conditions arose - hopefully I can check that out with the GP and my records will have come through from England to Scotland ( I know I've had AIH diagnosis since 2009 but have no idea when the hypertension began!)
I know I'll probably not need to call on it anyways - but better safe than sorry.

No, although I've been insured by them for around 5 years, I've never needed to make a claim. I suppose that's when you really find out how good they are. 10 years ago I had a stroke with a brain haemorrhage, I also have high blood pressure and underactive thyroid. I still managed to get cover, although it isn't cheap. They go through everything with you on the phone.

Gosh Gert - sounds like you have been through a bucket load, and then some. Glad you got sorted enough to continue enjoying life, and hope health runs smooth for you at present.
Happy 2017 to you
Sorry to be so late in reply

Both Margaret and I have various health conditions. We usually travel abroad with our motorhome and when we do we use the Caravan Club Red Pennant insurance which is good value. However when we travel without the motorhome insurance can become a bit of a nightmare. Having said that we have generally found Age UK to be quite reasonable so it might be worth checking them out.

Hello,
Again apologies for tardy reply
Been going through the mill a bit - supporting others
Thanks for the thumbs up on AGE UK ; will add them to my list.
Sorry to hear you have a collection of conditions too - hope you do not have much pain and can make the best of the good days 🙂
Have reached the time when my body sometimes feels more like 90 than 60 and bless having a sense of humour (most days ;-))

Suggest going to www.moneysupermarket.com as they will list premiums in price order. However, you need to move quickly as you should have taken out insurance when you booked the holiday because you will not be covered should you need to cancel between booking and taking out the insurance.

Don't forget you will also need electronic visas for both the USA and Canada. The USA one is called an ESTA and the Canadian one is called an ETA. Both are mandatory for UK visitors but you can get them online so you can apply nearer the time

Thanks Mike,
Have been wading through quotes and hope to get sorted soon - just had too much going on.
Will be sure to get insurance in place before we pay the balance and book flights.
Knew about the ESTA but not the ETA - so many thanks for that.

I'd recommend trying one of the comparison websites. For instance, Comparethemarket's travel insurance section includes questions regarding pre-existing conditions and so you should be able to find a competitive quote which covers your conditions. Failing that, moneysavingexpert.com has a section on pre-existing conditions which provides details on specialist insurers (though these are likely to charge more, so it's probably best to try the comparison websites first). Have a great trip.

Many thanks for coming back to me on this anf1408. I've not tried comparison sites for insurance before but sounds like you've had good experience with them and it could be worth a go.
Your good wishes are deeply appreciated 🙂
