Predatory Marriage - worse than being scammed!

Did you read in your newspaper this past week about problems a late-life marriage had caused a caring family? A younger man had secretly married a 90-year-old lady who was suffering with Dementia. This 'marriage' automatically revoked her existing Will. The result being that her new husband inherited her entire Estate and her family was left with nothing.

As we age, we all need to be wary of our increasing vulnerability to being taken advantage of by seemingly well-intentioned individuals. It seems to me that the law needs to be urgently changed to prevent this happening again and to take account of the changes in our world since the early 1800's when this Law was made.

I read this article as well and was absolutely horrified. Evidently the lady couldn't remember her new husband's name so presumably had to be prompted during the wedding ceremony. Surely the registrar should have questioned whether this lady was mentally fit to go through with the marriage. I think that the groom was in his sixties - alarm bells should have been ringing - and if they weren't, why not???? Also, who were the two witnesses? They must have felt uneasy about it, unless they were going to benefit later when the lady died. This is a tragedy and the registrar should be made to justify conducting a marriage ceremony when one partner was so obviously not fit to understand what she was doing.

Hi, I'm new to this site and was just checking in to see what's what when I came across your post. This is awful! How on earth was this marriage allowed to happen? I would have hoped that somewhere along the line during the process there would be someone asking relevant questions?! Obviously not. I don't read papers as I find them mostly full of doom, gloom and negative 'news' items. I "Thank you" though for bringing this to people's attention, I cannot begin to imagine how this poor lady's family felt upon discovering their elderly relative had been taken advantage of in such a way. I agree totally that antiquated laws need to be updated to protect the vulnerable.
