Private Home Helps

During a conversation with a new member of staff I was utterly shocked when she told me that she and a friend work as private home helps for rich elderly people. They charge the clients £20/£25 per hour each that is they both attend and charge £40/£50 per hour. I think this is outrageous and wonder whether to report them but who would I report to? BTW these home helps are in their mid 50's!

£25 per hr for a cleaner (if that is actually what they are) is extortionate . Are they registered as a business and paying Income Tax I wonder ??

I worked as a home carer for the council and was pretty poorly paid but that was my choice and I enjoyed the work. I knew people who did private home help work on the side but I wouldn't dream of asking how much they charged for the service, the rate would have been agreed between them and their clients.

RICH elderly people,
They got their money because either they inherited it,
or,
they were intelligent and earned it.

If the people doing the business were offering a service at a price which was agreed on and if the people were intelligent and had earned it where is the problem?.

I do not subscribe to the home helps discussion, these were cleaning ladies and doing something in their own time for extra income.

I suspect that there is a element of jealousy in the original comments

If the elderly people they are attending as home helps are of sound mind, I'm not sure the law is being broken. Costs do vary depending on where you live but I understand that on average, you can expect costs to be anywhere between £10 and £30 per hour depending on what the person does. Five years ago my mother was receiving local authority home help and was paying £35 an hour for someone to make her bed and clean her flat, there was no personal care involved.

I'm not sure who you could report to and what would you be reporting? Age UK may be able to give advise.

If you think these elderly people are being taken advantage of , then you should report it to the local authority elderly team as there may be a safeguarding issue here. Worth a try, there are some very unscrupulous people around and some very vulnerable elderly people.

So have they legally set themselves up as a business? Don't you have to have CRB checks etc.,

CRB checks are now called DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks. I'm not sure how it applies if self-employed.

Do they work for a company or self employed?

Wished to goodness we were more like Spain and family look after their elderly more.

Self employed!

My way of thinking is that home helping is just general housekeeping and doesn't warrant £25 an hour.........and if there are 2 friends attending they probably chat and faff around rather than do any hard grafting.........if it was £20/£25 per hour between them I'd say that was fair but each is an outrage. It doesn't seem right to me to take £50 per hour from anyone for doing a bit of housework for them! I'm sure a proper firm wouldn't charge £50 per hour!

I totally agree with you Jinty121 but there are a lot of people out there with no social conscience. They probably have the mentality that if someone is 'rich' then what does it matter.
