Retirement homes

Having known several couples who have decided that when they retired they decide to scale down and move to a retirement home.  For some, many of these places have just about everything they need, such as communal rooms, laundry rooms as well as dining rooms, and the recreation facilities, and in a very nice surroundings. The cost of moving to these places isn't cheap as there are other charges such as service charges which covers all the costs of repairs or maintenance, some of which can cost an extra several thousand pounds a year, all of which is extra to the cost of buying an apartment. So a move in the senior years for some, can be daunting and so looking into the cost of not only selling up and moving to a nice new home and in a new area, is some thing that needs serious consideration. Like everything in this world making the dream come true for many people is really really nice, but at a cost. What are your views on retirement homes?

Hi, we sold up, thought about downsizing...what a mistake that would have been, at least for us.....and now rent a "palace" 5 beds / 4 baths near Prague for just the 2 of us plus guests. Diana has her sewing room, her own bathroom (she likes a bath), I have mine too (I like a wet room), and a music studio where I practice, and a workshop for my model aircraft, and a garage etc etc. All this for about 1/4 of the cost in UK. Best thing we ever did. we don't live on top of each other, there is a good bus service and metro, village shops, medical, everything you could need for a pleasant retirement, and we go to the City often to restaurants, gigs, concerts and so on, or just to walk and gaze at the baroque architecture. Munich ? 4 hours, ditto Vienna, a day to Venice.
Retirement village...not sure that would be for us.

I am reasonably sane...but I will NEVER EVER go there, my kids wont like my decision to avoid this purgatory but I do not want my bottom wiped by a total stranger
