Saga's perfect for Silver Surfers

My wife and I have recently returned from a cruise onboard Saga's new ship, Spirit of Discovery. This really is the kind of ship that would suit those who qualify as Silver Surfers and Saga are renowned for looking after every aspect for that age group.

Without further ado, here is the link to my review which contains over 90 photographs from both the ship and the itinerary... https://solentrichardscruiseblog.com/2019/12/17/sagas-spirit-of-discovery-16-night-cruise/ Over to you, it's worth a read.

I'm glad that you enjoyed your cruise, though to us it more closely resembles our idea of hell. I remember my working days when I would fly weekly from Gatwick to Europe. After the "We're off to sunny Spain" brigade, there was the happy SAGA holiday makers. The queue for the check in was like a sea of blue rinses.

This must suit a lot of people - everything laid on and organised, but we've always booked our own holidays and travelled, often with no real idea of where we were going or what we would do when we got there. Early and late season, we fly off somewhere and in summer, it's off in our campervan.

No idea where we're going in 2020 and we rarely book (if at all) more than a week in advance.

Each of course to their own and I'm happy to say we too aren't restricted to pure 'cruising' holidays. We do however like our creature comforts so a camper van/ caravan holiday would not be for us.

I think we are all now in the same boat for 2020 though we were most fortunate to have successfully taken two breaks before lockdown commenced. The January trip through Thailand and Laos was most exciting...

...while the February/March Caribbean cruise was an excellent way to visit 11 different islands in relative comfort...

Maybe we will have to bring forward our late-retirement plans now with virus restrictions and think about taking a look at our own country.

Best wishes, Richard

Thanks for your response. i hope you and your family have avoided the dreaded virus. Things here in rural Scotland have been very quiet, but of course the farming and fishing have gone on as normal. Shopping was a bit of a nuisance, but gradually returned to near normal.

We were disappointed to have had to cancel our planned holiday to Vienna and Bratislava in march, but at least we didn't lose financially. Hopefully we'll re-book for early 2021. All our planned theatre visits were also cancelled - in fact all our plans were pretty well scuppered.

We love the freedom of the Campervan - we've had a series of them over about 40 years and it's becoming a very popular lifestyle. However, we are rather 'fair weather' campers and we have 2 or 3 holidays by air / hotel every year. In out late 60's we enjoy a bit of comfort too!

All the best for the rest of the year. Stay safe.

George.

I don't know why you saw that vision of blue rinses. I have not holidayed with Saga, preferring cruises until recently. Saga holidays do have elderly people, and why not, we all get old, however they were part of it, many people in their 50's and 60's. I wonder if people ever talks to these elderly people with blue rinses, they have lived a life and many are so interesting. I love people of all ages, age is in immaterial it is your attitude and zest of life. I go out of my way to pass the time of day with these older than myself and hope when I'm considered past it someone takes the time to do the same.

Relax Lunarstar. The Saga crowd looked as if they were having a great time. We're a couple of old crumblies ourselves. Growing old disgracefully and loving having a good time - but organised holidays are not for us.. We're much too spontaneous..

I would live to have my husband to travel with but since he died I do holiday alone and like the security of a group or a company rep I can go to. No holiday for me this year, feel do envious when I see the couples round here going off to holiday in uk, most are older than me and had each other in lockdown. My holidays kept me going.

Hi there, are you sure you dont work for the cruise company? Very much a marketing vibe
Response from SolentRichard Original Poster made on 10th Jul 2020 17:31:37
I can assure you I neither work nor have an interest in cruising companies bar being a shareholder in Carnival Corporation.

There is of course a pecuniary advantage to being a shareholder as on booking a cruise there is an additional allocation of spending money (On Board Credit) which usually adds up to half a dozen bottles of wine.

I am just so disappointed that two cruises booked will not be going ahead as I've loved cruising since being widowed. I was due to go to Iceland next week on Cunard. I am loathe to book another girl 2021 as the bother of getting deposits back etc is daunting, Also those stranded in their cabins at the beginning of the Pandemic haunts me, being alone in a small cabin having meals left outside the door frightens me more than the virus. I don't know where or how to holiday in future.
