Should the provision of Changing Places in public be toilets mandatory?

What are peoples thoughts on ensuring there is equality of access to disabled toilets for all by making the provision of Changing Places in public toilets mandatory?

At present any older child, teenager or adult who have special needs have no place available in public toilets to change their nappy. Baby changing facilities are only suitable for babies or very young children. This means that should an older person with special needs need a nappy change they either have to remain in a soiled nappy until they get home or be put on the floor of the public toilet for the change. This is both undignified and of high risk for the both the person requiring changing and the carer kneeling on the floor to change the nappy. Do you feel such facilities should be provided?

Absolutely - How undignified and unacceptable to have to change a young or older adult on a floor especially if you both struggle to get up again! Many places claim to have appropriate changing rooms - but there is a struggle to get a moulded wheelchair in and manoeuvred. Even worse are the ones who think it's okay to double up disabled toilets/changing rooms as mop and broom cupboards....

I've never really thought about this
But after reading the posts
I feel they should provide facilities
For this if not why don't they its
Certainly needed

I have to agree Hammers and although things are starting to change, albeit slowly, it is a fact that even hospitals do not provide such facilities.

Imagine if you had to change your grandchild on a public toilet floor. This is the reality for many disabled children, teenagers and adults in the UK. Is this right?

I agree with all these comments. Although I don't have to deal with this situation I have a young friend who does and have heard about the dirty floors and difficulties she has to deal with. How do we get improvements here? Should we all badger our local councils?

You could try that but there are also petitions that can be signed and will be sent to the Prime Minister. Try Change.org, we need peoples help to get things changed. Incidentally, I am in my mid 60's and 5 foot tall, my granddaughter is now 19 and weighs 9 stone is wheelchair bound unable to stand or walk and is unable to physically sit on a toilet (or understand what to do on it).

Ok jeanmark, going to look at change.org.

Thanks for your response but it's nappy changing facilities other than for babies/toddlers that is the problem, not disabled toilets. If you are physically unable to sit on a toilet for what ever reason and have to wear a nappy, it can't be changed unless you are put on the floor.

Thank you for your response but it is the provision of nappy changing facilities other than those for babies/toddlers that is the problem, not disabled toilets. If you are unable to physically use a toilet for what ever reason and have to wear a nappy, then the only place this can be changed is on the floor.
