The older you get, the harder you fall!
Watch this postI was out doggie walking on Sunday evening, I wandered down a trail that I haven't followed for a few years, it was quite muddy part way down and as I didn't fancy retracing my steps through even more mud I kept going. I came to a barbed wire fence that wasn't there the last time I walked the path. What should I do, go back the way I had come through the gloopy mud, or shimmy up and over the barbed wire? I elected for the latter, and after weighing things up I felt confident that I could get over a puny 1 metre high fence. There were some tree branches piled up against my side of the fence which provided a handy 'stepping stone' that some other walkers had obviously used. So, I stepped up onto the branches and swung my right leg over the wire (I hate barbed wire, and it scares me) I was just about to place my right foot on the ground when...the branches under my left foot collapsed and I fell onto the wire! My jacket and walking trousers were caught up in the wire and I had a bit of a struggle to get free, when I did eventually escape the wire's clutches I discovered that my left wrist, left inner thigh and tummy were scratched quite badly and I was bleeding profusely. I limped off home to clean myself up with antiseptic wipes and apply a few plasters. It was only then that I realised how close I had come to slicing into my femoral artery. If that had happened then I would not be writing this, I would be in the mortuary, because I was completely alone, apart from my dog and I hadn't taken my phone with me. I would have bled to death trying to get help, gulp! I spent much of Monday cursing my stupidity and swearing never again to attempt to climb a barbed wire fence. Have you ever done something silly, as a senior, that you were lucky to get away with?
