The perils of being a gentleman

Some months ago I had just left my local supermarket and was en route to my car, when I noticed a young lady sobbing and in obvious distress outside B&Ms. Now the code of the Fosdykes doesn't allow that troubled maidens should be ignored so, after checking that my tie was straight I approached and enquired as what bothered her. I was told that when she came downstairs that morning she had found Joey (her budgie) lying on the bottom of his cage with his little legs in the air. I didn't hesitate and began immediately to ooze sympathy.

I had progressed to saying there, there and was just about to begin patting her hand When a second lady (Let us call her lady B) approached and having completely misunderstood the situation began prodding me in the chest and claiming that it was men like me who caused all the trouble in the world... Of course, I tried to explain but she (lady B) was having none of it and asked what would my mother have thought had she known what a monster she had raised.

By this time people had begun to gather, amongst whom were several rough-looking men who, from their scowls and mutterings, were obviously considering handing out a bit of on-the-spot-justice...Now it is at times like this when one's thoughts turn toward their own safety, and of course, the safety of the half dozen eggs I was carrying and noticing a moment of indecision among my jurors I slipped away and sought the sanctuary of my car...Now it had always been my intention to have Captain Jack Fosdyke, "Almost a gentleman" inscribed on my tombstone but now I am not so sure.

Thank you Dani. The code of the Fosdykes doesn't recognize age if they can be of assistance. Each generation has known that they shall pass this way but once...Any good thing, therefore, that they can do, or any kindness they can show to a fellow creature, then let them do it now for hesitation cannot be considered.

Should a request for volunteers to man the life boat be made, then a Fosdyke would be the first to step forward. Should someone say "Don't go down that mine Fosdyke" it would have not the slightest effect on their resolve.

That’s so funny. And a well told story. Perhaps you need to focus on rescuing ladies nearer to you in age....they don’t require a recommendation from your MP and vicar, along with a history of your antecedents , in order to accept a bit of human kindness.
